Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine

NHS Forth Valley seeks to appoint a Consultant Intensivist to support its current Intensive Care team. It is expected that applicants will be a Fellow / Associate Fellow, or be eligible to become a Fellow / Associate Fellow, of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine, or provide evidence of similar training and experience. Applications are welcome from doctors dual trained in partner specialties (Anaesthetists, Physicians, Emergency Medicine doctors) or with associated parallel professional roles in, for example, education or research departments. It is not possible to deliver a full 10 PA job plan purely in an Intensive Care Medicine role at this time but we are keen to explore options that accommodate applicants with a single CCT in Intensive Care Medicine.
The post holder will work with the existing team of 10 Consultant Intensivists, trainees from ICM, Anaesthesia and Internal Medicine, Foundation doctors and Advanced Critical Care Practitioners. Together we share responsibility for providing a comprehensive Critical Care service that includes level 1 to level 3 care of medical and surgical patients within our modern 19 bed unit. Our department is committed to deliver high quality evidence-based care to each of our patients. Acute medical services are centralised in Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert. The Emergency Department is active and there is a flourishing acute medical service. Respiratory, cardiology and renal services are on site and there is significant overlap in our work. The organisation supports a wide range of surgical specialties. There are obstetric and paediatric services as well as acute and chronic pain services on site. The anaesthesia department uses surgical models such as Day of Surgery Admission, Day Case Surgery, Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS), improving pre-operative preparation and developing the Anaesthesia Team (including initiatives such as Anaesthesia Associates). Excellent working relationships exist between the Intensive Care service and these specialist departments. Any sessions out with your Intensive Care commitment will be delivered in your partner specialty, or professional area, by separate negotiation. Further information regarding these services can be obtained by facilitated contact with the relevant specialty leads.
The Intensive Care component of the post will involve resident daytime (including weekends) and evening sessions. Additional sessional commitments will depend on arrangements with partner specialties. There are no mandated resident overnight sessions in this post but appointees will be available on call to support the night team as required. Overnight on site staffing consists of one trainee or ACCP dedicated to ICU, with teamwork from the resident Consultant Anaesthetist and an anaesthesia trainee.
