Overview
An exciting opportunity to join a multidisciplinary team delivering patient-centred care in a fast-paced operating theatre environment. The role is for a Band 3 theatre assistant who will work predominantly in theatres as a circulating practitioner across Cardiac, Thoracic, Endoscopy, and related specialities, with opportunities to rotate through Cardiac/Thoracic theatres, pacing, forward wait, Endoscopy room, vascular, aortic, ACHD, and other clinical areas.
Responsibilities
* With support from the Registered Nurse/ODP, participate fully in the delivery of planned nursing care, including all aspects of nursing care.
* Rotate through all areas of theatre including Cardiac, thoracic, pacing, forward wait, Endoscopy room and various specialties (vascular, aortic, ACHD).
* Participate in the assessment of healthcare needs through completion and interpretation of assessment tools and documentation.
* Undertake general patient observations (temperature, pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, general appearance, fluid balance) and report anything untoward to Registered Nursing Staff/ODP.
* Wear appropriate safety attire (e.g., lead apron, FFP3 masks, etc.).
* Under the direction of the Registered Nurse/ODP, perform a range of clinical duties and skills (including safe positioning of patients, preparation of surgical/anaesthetic equipment, swab/needle/instrument counts, collection of patient specimens for laboratory testing, preparation and assistance in clinical procedures such as insertion of intravenous lines and urinary catheters).
* Participate in the decontamination and reprocessing of surgical instruments/equipment.
* Assist in the evaluation of care and completion of patient documents; ensure all entries in patient records are countersigned by the Registered Practitioner.
* Involve patients and carers/relatives in the delivery of care; provide reassurance and support to patients.
* Work collaboratively with others in the Operating Theatre to meet patients' needs; recognise and respond to urgent and emergency situations.
* Undertake transfer and escort of patients with moderate dependency to Theatres, Catheter Labs and other Clinical Departments.
* Ensure safe disposal of waste and sharps as per Trust policy; care for patients' property and valuables in accordance with Trust policy.
* Ensure theatres are cleaned and stocked after each case to maintain safety and cleanliness for the next case.
* Partake in all stages of the WHO Checklist.

* Employers are expected to implement the Care Certificate for all applicable new starters from April 2015; new clinical, patient-facing staff (bands 1-4) are expected to complete all 15 standards within the first 6 months with the Trust.
