Leeds Beckett University is seeking a dynamic and proactive Manager of Information Governance/Data Protection Lawyer to step into a pivotal role as the University's appointed Data Protection Officer (DPO). This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of information governance at a leading university. You will lead the implementation of the University's Information Governance Framework, providing expert leadership and guidance on the effective, risk-based governance and management of information across the institution. This role is about more than just compliance; it's about fostering a culture of best practice and enabling the University to thrive in a data-rich environment. What you’ll be doing: Lead and manage the Information Governance team, providing authoritative advice and ensuring compliance with Data Protection and Freedom of Information legislation. Develop and implement information governance policies, procedures, and training. Oversee information rights requests (DSAR/FOI/EIR), privacy notices, and records of processing. Manage data sharing, conduct data protection impact assessments, and monitor risk. Oversee records management, retention, and security, including managing data breaches. Provide expert advice and reports on information governance to the University Executive Team and committees. Collaborate with the Legal, DDI, and ITS teams on data governance and security. Contribute to internal audits and engage with external information governance networks. Manage budgets and lead communications with the Information Commissioner's Office. What you’ll bring: Qualified lawyer (solicitor or barrister) with a strong understanding of the legal principles underpinning Data Protection (Essential). Proven experience in leadership and management. Extensive knowledge of information governance legal and regulatory frameworks. A track record of providing specialist advice and delivering strategic objectives. Excellent interpersonal, influencing, and negotiation skills. Why Leeds Beckett?
