Role Purpose
The purpose of the Education Worker (Visually Impaired) is to work as an effective member of the support services team within a learning community, delivering high quality service which supports the integration of visually impaired pupils into mainstream education.
• To enable equal access for visually impaired learners to the curriculum and school environment, according to the assessed needs of the visually impaired learner;
• To encourage the development of the individual visually impaired learner within educational, social, linguistic and cultural contexts through a range of appropriate strategies;
• To provide access to a range of learning materials using appropriate communication methods to match the needs of the individual visually impaired learner;
• To promote awareness of visual impairment and provide advice and guidance for teaching staff and/or peer groups and to involve the visually impaired learners whenever possible.
• To enable visually impaired learners to make independent choices and learn from their own experiences.
• To keep accurate records of work and perform support-related administration as required, e.g. for purposes of management, inspection and audit.
Principal duties & responsibilities
To undertake specific tasks such as:
• To contribute to the planning process and formulation of learning and improvement plans.
• To keep accurate records and contribute to the monitoring and tracking of pupil progress.
• To assist with the preparation for support sessions or subject areas as appropriate.
• To provide translation/interpretation between teacher/peers and the child in a variety of situations. Use a range of support strategies, for example supporting the use of aids for Habilitation work, producing and supporting the use of tactile resources, providing auditory commentary of visual aspects of lessons, consolidation of Braille learning, supporting the use of IT to enhance access to learning.
• Undertake a range of duties which support the care and welfare of visually impaired/mainstream pupils.
• Maintain awareness of developments and training opportunities within the Learning Environment and VI education.
• Facilitate communication with peers, staff and other adults.
• To work in collaboration with Teachers of the Visually Impaired.
Essential
• A commitment to work towards formal qualification in Braille
• Well developed literacy and numeracy skills
