About The Role
At Whitworths, we’re on an exciting mission to help boost the nation’s nutrient intake — improving the health of families through the natural goodness found in our products. We’re proud to be the only brand that brings a credibly nutritious boost to breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, baking and beyond.
We’re now looking for a passionate and proactive Health, Safety & Environment Manager to join our Irthlingborough site. You’ll be at the heart of keeping our people safe, ensuring compliance, and driving a culture of continuous improvement where everyone takes ownership for a safe and sustainable workplace.
This is more than a compliance role - it’s an opportunity to make a real difference, shaping the future of health, safety and environmental leadership at Whitworths.
What you’ll do
Working with a small Health and Safety team, you will report into the Supply Chain Director and provide key support for the development and implementation of a business wide Health, Safety and Environment strategy, whilst managing and over-seeing the day to day running of this vital function, ensuring that we continue to produce high quality products in a safe and compliant manner.
* Lead the site HSE strategy and roadmap, ensuring full legal compliance and alignment to relevant ISO standards.
* Create and maintain the Site HSE Management System and champion effective reporting, investigation and corrective actions for all incidents, near misses and environmental events.
* Ensure all required reports are reported to the HSE/EA or relevant authority
* Lead and develop your team — including our MHE Instructor — to enhance competence, engagement and ownership at every level.
* Act as Whitworths’ competent HSE person, advising leaders and employees on all health, safety and environmental matters and training compliance
* Chair the monthly HSE Steering Committee and provide performance updates to the Board, turning insight into action.
* Partner with site leadership to embed a proactive safety culture built on our STAR Values – Solutions, Teamwork, Accountability and Respect.
* Drive risk assessment reviews, manage fire safety programmes, and support HSE requirements across all customer and regulatory audits.
* Act as a key member of the site Emergency Response Team.
What are the key ingredients needed for the role?
* Health Safety and Environmental management experience within a manufacturing or food production environment with a track record of improving culture and metrics.
* NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent) and current knowledge of UK HSE legislation
* Strong leadership, coaching and influencing skills - inspire others to take accountability and deliver safe outcomes.
* A solution-focused mindset and the ability to balance strategic planning with hands-on delivery.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with confidence liaising with external bodies.
* A continuous improvement approach — always looking for better, smarter, safer ways of working.
* Competence in risk management, investigations (root cause), management systems and audit readiness.
* Confident communicator with solid Microsoft 365 skills and the ability to design and deliver compelling presentations.
* Experience implementing or maintaining ISO standards
* Project management exposure
* People leadership experience within fast-moving operations.
