PCB Test & Repair Engineer

Overview:
A technically focused engineering manufacturer based near Pickering in North Yorkshire is seeking a PCB Test & Repair Engineer to support its growing electronics division. The business designs and builds complex, high-reliability systems used in demanding, safety-critical applications around the world.
This role is ideal for someone with a background in PCB fault finding, testing, and hands-on repair, who is confident using diagnostic tools and working to high-quality standards.
Role Purpose:
To carry out functional testing, diagnostics, and hands-on repair of Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) across a range of electronic systems. The role involves close collaboration with design and production teams to ensure performance, reliability, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities:
PCB Testing
* Perform testing using oscilloscopes, multimeters, and other diagnostic tools (including automated test equipment where applicable).
* Compare test results against design specifications to identify any deviations or performance issues.
* Develop and execute test plans and procedures to verify functionality and compliance.
PCB Repair
* Diagnose and repair faults on PCBs, including surface-mount and through-hole components.
* Conduct hands-on component-level repairs including rework, soldering, and replacement.
* Use specialist tools such as hot-air rework stations, soldering irons, microscopes, and reflow ovens.
Documentation & Collaboration
* Maintain accurate records of test results, failure modes, and repair activities.
* Produce clear and concise reports to support traceability and quality assurance.
* Liaise with engineering and production teams to provide feedback and support improvements in design or process.
Skills & Experience:
Essential:
* Hands-on experience in PCB testing, diagnostics, and repair.
* Competent in soldering and desoldering techniques (both SMD and through-hole).
* Ability to interpret electronic schematics, layout drawings, and BOMs.
* Familiarity with test and measurement equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, etc.).
* Comfortable performing fault-finding and component-level troubleshooting.
* Strong attention to detail with good organisational and documentation skills.
* Able to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.
Desirable:
* Minimum 2–3 years' experience in a similar electronics role.
* Formal qualification (e.g. HNC, BTEC, NVQ, City & Guilds) in Electronics or Electrical Engineering.
* IPC-A-610 Certification or equivalent.
* Experience with complex board types including multi-layer and rigid-flex designs.
* Good understanding of analogue/digital electronics, microcontrollers, and power electronics.
