For safety reasons, everyone training to be a prison officer needs a suitable standard of hearing (without hearing aids). To work in a high security prison (category A), you must have been a resident in the UK for the last 3 years.
Assessment process
You will be invited to complete stage 1 of the online test to assess basic judgment and numerical skills. If you pass, you will proceed to stage 2, which involves a task-based assessment. Successful completion of online tests will lead to an online assessment centre (OAC). After passing the OAC and being allocated to a vacancy, you will be invited to complete a medical and fitness test, including eyesight, hearing, and health screening.
Pay and benefits
* Initial training is 37 hours per week. After training, you can choose to work 37, 39, or 41 hours per week. Salaries reflect your weekly hours:
* 37 hours: £33,746 per year
* 39 hours: £35,875 per year
* 41 hours: £38,003 per year
* All salary figures include allowances.
* Standard working week is based on a 39-hour shift pattern.
* 25 days' annual holiday, rising to 30 days after 10 years' service.
* Paid time off for public holidays and an additional privilege day.
* Civil Service pension with employer contributions of 28.97%.

Job offers and merit vacancy
This is a merit-based vacancy. Successful candidates at the online assessment centre will be added to a merit list, with offers made to the highest scorers when positions are available. The merit list is valid for 12 months.
Operational Support Grade (OSG)
If unsuccessful in becoming a prison officer, you may be offered an alternative role as an OSG. The OAC assesses suitability for this role as well.
