We’re looking for a strategic, forward-thinking legal leader to head up our People Division within Legal Services. This is a high-impact role where you’ll guide a team of talented lawyers working across Adult Social Care, Children’s Services, Education, and Litigation, helping to deliver legal solutions that support the Council’s priorities and make a real difference to our communities.
What You’ll Be Doing
* Lead and manage the People Team, ensuring high-quality, efficient legal services are delivered across complex and sensitive areas.
* Provide expert legal advice to senior officers, elected Members, and external partners, helping shape policy and decision-making.
* Build strong, trusted relationships with Directors and senior leaders to understand their goals and challenges, offering proactive legal support and strategic insight.
* Oversee the most complex legal cases, ensuring robust, compliant, and innovative solutions.
* Drive performance and continuous improvement, ensuring the team meets financial targets and maintains high standards.
* Represent Legal Services on internal and external working groups, contributing to cross-council initiatives and partnerships.
* Authorise the use of external legal counsel where needed, ensuring value and quality.
* Champion a positive team culture, aligned with the Council’s values, and support staff development and wellbeing.
What We’re Looking For
* A qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of CILEX (England & Wales).
* Extensive experience in Social Care law and/or Litigation, ideally within a local authority setting.
* Proven leadership skills with the ability to inspire, manage and develop a high-performing legal team.
* Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with a track record of delivering creative legal solutions.
* Excellent communication and influencing skills, especially at senior and political levels.
* Financial acumen and experience managing budgets and performance targets.
* Deep understanding of local government law and the wider public sector landscape.
