The Senior Dental Nurse, will work within the Dental Teaching Unit of the Port Talbot Resource Centre (PTRC), to maintain high standards of dental nursing care throughout the department, working within the policies and procedures of the Health Board and GDC scope of practice.

The Senior Dental Nurse has the delegated authority to provide a comprehensive range of dental nurse skills to support clinicians in the provision of dentistry. The Senior Dental Nurse will supervise and allocate duties to the dental nurse working within the PTRC dental suite and provide clinical and chair side support to clinicians within the dental services.

This post is secondment for 24 months to meet the needs of the service.

Main duties of the job

To manage the co-ordination of the dental nurse staff within the PTRC Dental Unit (Dental Teaching Unit & Restorative Dentistry).

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to problem solve in a timely manner, communicating effectively at all levels within the organisation, patients/carers.

Excellent knowledge of HTM01-05 and HIW.

Responsible for producing and maintaining nursing rotas, managing any changes to schedules clinics and to liaise with senior staff at the dental suite to ensure adequate staffing levels are available to carry out clinical sessions.

To direct staff to ensure clinical appointment times are booked efficiently and comprehensive, maximising clinical available time.

Supervision of staff who are responsible for decontaminating dental instruments, to carry out and document all daily and weekly tests on the sterilisation of equipment.

Maintain the management of dental nurse staff records, including sickness and annual leave.

Responsible for carrying out Personal Appraisal & Development Reviews (PADRs) with all dental nurses within the dental suite on an annual basis.

To support the recruitment of dental nurses.

To be responsible for evoking, when necessary, disciplinary procedures for dental nurse staff.

Receive and prepare patients to undergo dental treatment, assisting at the chairside throughout such treatment and supervising the patient until they are fit to leave the premises.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. GDC registration or National Certificate / Hospital certificate for Dental Nursing N.V.Q. level 3.
2. Knowledge of other dental services, including referral systems for specialist services. Knowledge of corporate and clinical governance issues.

Desirable criteria

3. Additional post certificate qualification.

Experience

Essential criteria

4. Significant experience as a dental nurse in a dental practice/clinic environment or within the NHS.
5. Experience in dental nurse development, management, team working and managing staff.
6. Knowledge of the Restorative Dental department.

Desirable criteria

7. Recent experience working with Foundation Dentists Experience as a team leader/supervisor.
8. Experience of working in the NHS.

Aptitude and abilities

Essential criteria

9. Adhere to and can demonstrate SBU Values & Behaviours.
10. Effective training skills with an ability to motivate others and develop a team spirit Ability to manage conflict. Ability to multi-task Ability to work towards and meet firm deadlines.
11. IT Literate, able to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams together with relevant dental management and referral systems. Excellent communication skills (both written and oral).
12. Ability to communicate effectively at all levels within an organisation with patients and carers. Ability to work under own initiative or as an effective team player. Excellent organisational and time management skills with the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines. Good coaching skills.

Desirable criteria

13. Welsh Language Skills are desirable levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh.
