Overview

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, innovative and progressive Consultant to join our Trauma and Orthopaedics Consultant team who shares our passion for excellence. It is essential the candidate has completed fellowship training in Hip/ Knee surgery, arthroplasty and/or knee conservation surgery. This is a full-time 10 programmed activity position with on-call commitments 1:12, at present. Applications are welcomed from candidates with FRCS (or equivalent) who are on the General Medical Council's Specialist Register in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery or who will be within six months of obtaining their CCT at the time of interview.

The appointee, when on-call, will cover Midland Metropolitan Hospitals, being responsible for the take and the fracture clinics. The applicants should demonstrate within their application that they are fully trained in the generality of Trauma & Orthopaedics, can manage complex upper & lower limb trauma and have a special interest in knee conservation and arthroplasty. This job is for 12 months starting as soon as possible with the aim to convert to a substantive position.


Main duties

The post will enable the successful applicant to develop sub-specialty surgery interests to complement the existing consultant staff, develop further towards a recognised Black Country Alliance service, in conjunction with Russell's Hall Hospital, Dudley and Manor Hospital, Walsall. The appointee will take equal responsibility with existing Consultants for the proper functioning of the clinical service, working with clinical and managerial colleagues towards achieving and maintaining national maximum waiting times and developing clinical pathways in line with the maximum 18-week patient pathway guarantee. There may be a commitment to General Orthopaedic on-call as part of this post, which at present is 1 in 12 split weekend / days (which may change in future). The appointee may have to do some weekend elective lists as a part of the Job plan.

The appointee will take equal responsibility with existing Consultants for the proper functioning of the clinical service, working with clinical and managerial colleagues towards achieving and maintaining national maximum waiting times and developing clinical pathways in line with the maximum 18-week patient pathway guarantee, and a 23-hour arthroplasty service. There will be a commitment to General Orthopaedic on-call as part of this post, which at present is 1 in 12 split weekend / days. The appointee may have to do some weekend elective lists as a part of the Job plan.

Qualifications

Essential

* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT or CESR (CP) - proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview
* FRCS T& O or equivalent

Desirable

* Higher Degree

Clinical Experience

Essential

* Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in Trauma and Orthopaedics
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the management of acute medical emergencies
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients

Desirable

* Special interest that complements the existing consultants
* Special Interest in Foot & Ankle Surgery

Professional and Multi-disciplinary team working

Management and Administrative Experience

* Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
* Ability to plan strategically and to exercise sound judgements when faced with conflicting pressures.

* Experience of leading Clinical Service.

* Experience of conducting clinical audit
* Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision-making

* Ability to teach clinical skills to medical and nursing staff and other disciplines.
* The ability to appraise junior doctors and other staff.

* Formal training in teaching

Research, Innovation and Service Improvement Experience

* Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
* An awareness of current specialty developments, initiatives and issues

Desirable

* Knowledge and experience of the application of information technology to Trauma and Orthopaedics
* peer-reviewed journals in the last five years.
* Evidence of having undertaking original research

* Full GMC Registration
* An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues.
