£32,080 to £47,389 per annum, depending on skills and experience (minimum £35,608 with relevant PhD). Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance.

Position
We are seeking a highly motivated researcher with expertise in statistics and computational methods to work with Professors Theodore Kypraios and Philip O’Neill on an NIHR‑funded project entitled Beyond Data‑Augmentation: Advancing Bayesian Inference for Stochastic Disease Transmission Models. The project aims to develop next‑generation statistical tools for fitting stochastic epidemic models to infectious disease outbreak data and will deliver open‑source software, rigorous evaluation, and training materials.
Responsibilities
* Undertake original research of international excellence in Bayesian inference and stochastic transmission modelling.
* Develop research objectives and proposals for both independent and collaborative work.
* Prepare papers for publication in leading journals and disseminate results at national and international conferences and workshops.
* Identify opportunities and assist in writing bids for research grant applications, preparing proposals to external and internal funding bodies.
* Contribute to the development and maintenance of open‑source software and training materials.
* Engage with multidisciplinary and multicultural research teams.
Qualifications
* A PhD, or near completion of a PhD, in statistics, machine learning, or a closely related discipline.
* Expert knowledge of statistical inference methods, particularly Bayesian approaches.
* Excellent communication and organisational skills, with the ability to write clearly and progress complex ideas to a broad audience.
* Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
* Strong networking skills and a commitment to engaging with diverse groups.
Contract details
This full‑time fixed‑term contract commences on 1 September 2026 (or sooner) and ends on 30 April 2029. Flexible working arrangements may be discussed.
