We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 7 Biomedical Scientist within the Haematology department at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust. We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated, forward-thinking individual, to help deliver a high-quality, first-class service to our users.
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England serving the populations of Birmingham and Solihull. The Trust is composed of four main hospital sites: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB), Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital. The post-holder will be required to work at the HGS laboratories initially but would be expected to work at any site within the Trust.
This busy department receives over half a million requests annually, providing a twenty-four-hour diagnostic and monitoring services. The laboratory is ISO 15189 and HCPC/IBMS accredited, MHRA approved and facilitates military training.
The ideal candidate must be a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with a relevant Biomedical Science Master’s degree, HSD or recognised equivalent. You must have UK laboratory experience as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, at band 6 level or above, with a specialist interest in Haematology, having a sound theoretical and practical knowledge. Further study, scientific posters and papers, and CPD are strongly encouraged and supported.

Responsibilities
* Day-to-day management of the hospital's haematology laboratory.
* Work collaboratively with the service management team and other senior biomedical scientists in haematology, coagulation and blood transfusion.
* Train staff, perform appraisals and other HR/workforce duties; maintain good communication and interpersonal skills.
* Work within a 24/7 shift system with potential limited out-of-hours duties and deputise for the haematology operational manager as required.
* Commit to high standards of service, staff training, and laboratory quality, with understanding of ISO 15189:2012 requirements.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist.
* MSc or equivalent (IBMS ratified) or equivalent Level 7 Postgraduate Certification/Diploma.
* Evidence of continuing professional development and proficiency per HCPC guidelines.
* Post-registration specialty training per IBMS guidelines.
Desirable
* Attended formal management course.
* Good awareness of current issues within Pathology locally and nationally.
Experience
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Discipline-specific proficiency for HCPC registration and significant post-registration experience in a laboratory discipline.
* Specialised knowledge of biomedical science theory and practice; troubleshooting in a specialised laboratory environment.
* Quality control/assurance; health and safety practices; knowledge of laboratory quality management systems and accreditation standards (e.g., ISO 15189, MHRA).
* HCPC and IBMS professional standards, ethics and proficiencies.
