Accredited Clinical Coder - Peterborough
Are you an Accredited Clinical Coder with experience working within an acute NHS hospital setting?
The Clinical Coding team at our hospital site Peterborough are looking to recruit to our substantive team of multi-skilled specialist Clinical Coders. The successful candidate will be ACC qualified with experience in coding a broad range of clinical specialties.
Applicants must demonstrate excellent communication skills with the ability to engage with clinicians and all relevant support staff to ensure our coded data reflects accurately the care of our patients. Excellent analytical and judgement skills are essential in this role as is good working knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy across a range of clinical specialties. You will be responsible for managing your own workload each day within the usual deadlines for submission of data.
We pride ourselves on sharing knowledge across teams with support from senior colleagues who may be nominated as mentors to assist all coding colleagues where appropriate. You will also be supported by qualified auditors and a trainer.
* ACC Clinical Coder Band 5 - £32,073-£39,043 (dependent upon years of experience) per annum
* Hours: Full Time 37.5 hours per week

Main Duties of the Job
* Translate clinical information into diagnostic and procedure codes from patient health records scanned into an electronic document management system and various other electronic sources.
* Conduct validation exercises with responsible Consultant to ensure correct assignment of diagnostic and procedure codes and to identify gaps in clinical documentation to support clinical coding.
* Communicate complex coding rules to clinical and non-clinical staff and external agencies.
* Abstract and analyze complex clinical records for accurate coding.
* Plan and organize workload to meet usual deadlines for submission of coded data.
* Operate on own initiative and do background research to achieve accurate coding.
Education and Qualifications
* IHRIM Accredited Clinical Coder
* Educated to A Level qualification in sciences e.g. Biology or equivalent knowledge acquired through work based training
* AMSPAR Certificate in Medical Terminology
* ECDL IT skills qualification or equivalent experience in Microsoft packages
Experience
* Ability to code all specialties
* Communicate complex coding rules to clinical and non-clinical staff and external agencies
* Experience of working as a clinical coder in the NHS
* Use of hospital administration systems
* Demonstrate an understanding of clinical coding and its uses
* Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomical and physiological terms
* Attendance at Clinical Coding refresher workshops
* Analytical & judgemental skills
* Ability to abstract and analyse complex clinical records
* Ability to communicate complex information to clinical and administrative staff
* Planning and organisational skills
* Operate on own initiative
* Undertake background research to achieve accurate coding
* Ability to concentrate for extended periods of time
