About the role

We are seeking a highly motivated scientist in Medicinal Chemistry to join a multidisciplinary research team focused on the design, synthesis and evaluation of novel small molecules for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The project is a key program for developing modulators targeting the non‑coding triple‑helix RNA NEAT1. The successful candidate will play a key role in performing structure‑activity relationship studies on the existing hit series, implementing synthetic strategies, and generating compounds with desirable biological activity, selectivity, and optimal physicochemical properties. The position offers opportunities to develop advanced skills in organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, and molecular design, while gaining experience in supervising and mentoring postgraduate and undergraduate students.

Key responsibilities

* Synthesis, purification and characterisation of new biologically active compounds
* Design and optimise synthetic routes, reagents and conditions for efficient compound preparation
* Conduct hit‑to‑lead optimisation and molecular modelling to identify promising lead series
* Supervise and mentor students, providing guidance in their research activities
* Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to implement research projects
* Prepare and present research findings at conferences and in peer‑reviewed journals
* Adhere to safety protocols and maintain accurate laboratory and experimental records
* Contribute to grant writing and funding proposals to support ongoing research initiatives
* Promote a safe, healthy and fair working environment where bullying and harassment are not tolerated

Even if your past experience doesn’t match perfectly with this role’s criteria, your contribution is valuable, and we encourage you to apply.

Essential and desirable criteria

* PhD in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry or closely related subject OR significant relevant experience in drug discovery settings (Stage 1)
* Experience executing and optimising multi‑step organic syntheses (Stage 1)
* Experience in computational chemistry and molecular modelling techniques (Stage 2)
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with team members (Stage 1)
* Experience supervising students and managing research projects (Stage 2)
* Strong written and oral communication skills, ability to present complex data clearly (Stage 2)
* Excellent collaboration skills and ability to work effectively in a team (Stage 2)

Pay range

Base pay range: £7.5 (Grade 7.5). The actual salary will be based on your skills and experience. Full‑time, permanent. Duration: 1 Dec 2025 – 30 Nov 2026.
