Consultant in cardiothoracic & paediatric cardiac anaesthesia

Applications are invited for an individual to provide high quality anaesthetic care as a Consultant Anaesthetist based within the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre (EMCHC) at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

We undertake a range of congenital cardiac cases including surgery for univentricular hearts and catheter procedures such as RVOT stents and PA flow restrictors. Paediatric Cardiac Catheter procedures are undertaken within the new hybrid theatre. The centre is part of an excellent ECMO service for both paediatrics and adults. Adult congenital cardiac surgery and catheter procedures are carried out at the Glenfield’s hospital site and the successful candidate would be expected to provide cross‑cover.


Responsibilities

* Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.
* Share with colleagues responsibility for the day‑to‑day management of patients.
* Promote new ways of working and co‑ordinating care for patients in the community and ensure services are based on effective and integrated partnerships across the health community.
* Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences.
* Supervise and train junior medical staff.
* Be involved in appraising and assessing juniors.
* Teaching, research and administration.
* Proactively develop the service.
* Actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
* Provide specialist high‑risk anaesthesia outpatient clinic work.
* Participate in pre‑assessment clinics and MDT meetings.
* Participate in the Paediatric Cardiac Consultant Anaesthetist non‑resident on‑call rota.
* Support the Consultant‑delivered Perioperative Medicine Service.
* Work flexibly to support the workload and cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences.
* Participate in service development and business planning in collaboration with other Consultants, the CMG, local GPs and commissioners within local CCGs.
* Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff, observing local employment and HR policies and procedures.
* Carry out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contribute to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activities, locally and nationally.
* Participate in medical audit and the Trust's Clinical Governance processes and in CPD – CPD is provided in job plans and attendance at audit and other governance meetings is mandatory.
* Managerial, including budgetary responsibilities where appropriate and compliance with standing orders and standing financial instructions of the Trust.
* Ensure all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard, in accordance with current quality initiatives within the area of work (GMC Good Medical Practice).
* Respond in a timely fashion to legitimate requests from Trust officers – including investigations of incidents or complaints.
* Participate in teaching and training of junior staff and other clinical staff groups; supervise junior medical staff within the specialty.
* Participate in professional continuing medical education; study leave is provided for this purpose.

Additional Information

Disclosure and Barring Service Check: if successful and the post involves regulated activity you will be required to undertake a DBS check. The Trust will pay for the check initially and the money will then be deducted from your salary over a three‑month period commencing on your first month's payment (enhanced £38, standard £18).
