Principal Clinical Scientist
We are seeking an enthusiastic, self‑motivated HCPC registered Clinical Scientist to join the Protein Reference Unit and Immunology Department at Northern General Hospital. The role involves the development and delivery of complex scientific and diagnostic procedures, providing clinical advice, and acting as liaison between the laboratory and clinicians.

Main duties of the job
* Develop and deliver complex and specialised scientific and diagnostic procedures, providing skilled performance and clinical advice.
* Collaborate with other Clinical Scientists to ensure a comprehensive service within the department.
* Provide scientific and clinical advice, assist in reviewing and formulating policies and protocols, and participate in the evaluation of new assays, equipment and procedures.
* Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of immunology and specialist assays in the Protein Reference Unit and Immunology Department; review abnormal results and discuss urgent findings with requesting clinicians.
Qualifications
* MSc in Clinical Immunology.
* Part 1 FRCPath qualification or equivalent experience in Immunology.
* Certificate of completion of training issued by the Association of Clinical Biochemists (ACB) or Completion of the Scientist Training Programme (CCSTP) from the National School of Healthcare Science (NSHCS).
* Registration with the Health Care Professions Council as a Clinical Scientist.
* Demonstration of continued professional development.
Experience
* Advanced specialist knowledge of clinical immunology and laboratory medicine.
* Substantial experience as a clinical Scientist in an Immunology laboratory covering a wide range of tests.
* Experience and knowledge of the assays performed in the Protein Reference Unit.
* Previous experience in audit, research and development, method/equipment appraisal and evaluation.
* Awareness of the political and cultural aspects of the NHS.
* Awareness of clinical governance and risk management.
* Management of a specialist or routine service; experience managing staff and resources.
* Knowledge of accreditation standards, legislation and national/local policies.
* Strong analytical and judgemental skills; literacy, IT and numeracy skills.
* Effective communication skills, written and oral.
* Excellent time‑management skills, ability to handle conflicting priorities and maintain calmness under pressure.
* Capability to anticipate problems, appraise risks and make effective decisions.
* Experience providing leadership and motivation to staff and delivering professional leadership on a wider scale.
* Ability to work independently, using initiative, and to take appropriate actions and advice to others.
* Awareness of laboratory health and safety.
