Overview of role:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Level Electrical Engineer to join our high-voltage renewables engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing high quality earthing designs and electrical substation layouts. This role is critical to ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of our clients electrical networks. As part of the wider electrical design team, produce electrical layouts for substations (including AIS up to 132kV), cable route layout drawings & sections, LV layouts, switch-room and control room layouts and earthing layouts. You will also need to identify and ensure design compliance with all relevant standards, legislation, Customer requirements, DNO standards and contract specifications throughout the project lifecycle. In addition, review tender or contract documentation and establish the primary electrical scope of works and prepare design deliverables.
* Produce a wide range of substation and site layout designs, including 11–132kV AIS/GIS substations, switch rooms, control rooms, BoP/EPC layouts, and associated plan/elevation drawings.
* Carry out busbar design activities, including calculations, sizing, support requirements, clamp schedules, and outline structure designs.
* Lead the full lifecycle of earthing system design—soil testing, modelling (CDEGS), EPR/touch/step assessments, lightning studies, EMC considerations, material specifications, and production of all associated reports/drawings.
* Produce comprehensive layout drawings for earthing, heating/lighting/ventilation, cable management, ducting/cabling, and LV AC block diagrams for switchrooms and control rooms.
* Develop technical documentation including calculations, specifications (e.g., disconnectors), technical reports, design correspondence, and manage document control to QA standards.
* Collaborate with internal teams, external design suppliers, procurement, and wider stakeholders; ensure designs meet G81, DNO standards, British/European standards, CDM, and project requirements.
* Provide leadership in design reviews, problem‑solving, safety-by-design, programme/budget control, and resolution of project challenges.
* Support team development by mentoring junior engineers, identifying training needs, and contributing to project-specific designer risk assessments.
Personal Skills & Qualities

* Previous experience with consultancy, contractor or utility in the Power industry.
* Previous experience of technical management of a specialist design team
* Experience in the field of primary electrical design of HV / EHV AC substations and BoP projects ranging from 11kV to 132kV.
* Understanding of industry HV and EHV substation installation standards and specifications.
* Ability to take the initiative, demonstrate a pro-active approach to activities, problems and oneself.
* Understanding of power cable installation, their requirements and installation parameters i.e. flexible or rigid arrangements, minimum bending radii etc.
* Ability to manage the various inter-departmental design interfaces (i.e. structural design, planning, electrical design, CAD technicians) efficiently and effectively to deliver complex designs solutions.
* Ability to both write and understand technical documents relating to all aspects of substation electrical plant & equipment.
* Have an excellent understanding of risks associated with cabling works. Have working knowledge of the role of the designer under the CDM Regulations 2015.
* Ability to complete a designer's risk assessment for designs being developed and produced.
