The UK’s strategy to deliver Net Zero is driving a transformation in the energy sectors, which are responsible for 24% of UK greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The Agency is committed to ensuring that energy sectors protect people and the environment from emissions, whilst also mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change.


Responsibilities

* Provide expert support and technical leadership through advice, guidance, and training.
* Develop strategy for our sectors and produce the tools to regulate, support development and deliver environmental outcomes.
* Commission and manage external research projects where needed.
* Work with internal and external stakeholders such as Defra, DESNZ, internal operations teams, trade associations, and other key industry players.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be asked to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.


Team

The Energy & COMAH team is part of the Energy and Manufacturing Industries Regulation of Environment & Business (E&B) Directorate. Our technical experts lead on the definition of standards for our sectors, providing strategic direction, tools in support of sector regulation, guidance and training, and environmental best practice.


Experience & Skills Required

* Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in their work.
* Relevant technical and regulatory knowledge, and experience of the work area for the role, gained either by working within and/or regulating relevant processes. This includes knowledge of control measures for emissions to air where relevant.
* Ability to build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government, trade bodies and academia.
* Work cooperatively as part of a team to achieve common goals.


Additional Information

This vacancy closes end of October.

Interviews are expected to be held in person in Birmingham, by the end of November.

Role will require some travel.

If you consent to be recruited onto a reserve list, we’ll hold your details for 6 months and may offer you an alternative post.

Length of contract: Up to 2 years.


Competences


Legislative Knowledge

Definition: Applies knowledge of statutory environmental and technical requirements to protect both the Environment Agency and the environment.

As a senior advisor for the energy sectors you will give advice on different regulatory requirements applying to combustion plants of different sizes and purposes.


Works in Teams

Definition: Works co‑operatively as part of a team to achieve common goals.

As a combustion senior advisor you will work with other senior advisors covering a wide portfolio of work both reactive and planned.


Builds and Sustains Relationships

Definition: Develops and maintains effective working relationships.

As a senior advisor you will work with a range of external and internal stakeholders, including government officials, trade associations and the EA’s operational teams.
