Head of Data Governance
Royal Mail is transforming the way we use data to power commercial performance, customer experience, and strategic decision‑making. We are now seeking an experienced Head of Data Governance to lead the development and delivery of a robust data governance framework across our Salesforce ecosystem and wider commercial data landscape.
This is a high‑impact leadership role, responsible for ensuring that customer and commercial data is accurate, secure, compliant, and trusted — enabling the organisation to treat data as a true strategic asset.
About the Role
As the Head of Data Governance, you will set the vision, strategy, and operating model for governance across all commercial data. You’ll define policies, embed standards, and lead a cross‑functional community of data stewards to ensure data quality and compliance are consistently upheld.
Working closely with senior leaders across Sales, Marketing, Customer Experience, Pricing, Revenue Protection, and Commercial Transformation, you will champion a culture of data stewardship and ensure governance supports both regulatory requirements and commercial goals.
Key Responsibilities
1. Commercial Data Governance Strategy & Framework
* Develop and implement a comprehensive data governance strategy for Salesforce and related commercial platforms.
* Define policies for data ownership, classification, retention, and security.
* Establish governance forums and working groups to drive accountability.
* Partner with the Head of CRM Development & Delivery to ensure governance aligns with the Salesforce roadmap and platform integrity.
2. Data Quality & Supervision
* Define and enforce data quality standards, metrics, and controls.
* Work with business and technical teams to improve data integrity across CRM, ERP, and BI systems.
* Build and lead a data stewardship model to ensure data owners are accountable for quality.
3. Governance in Practice
* Embed governance into operational workflows such as account onboarding, segmentation, and reporting.
* Align Salesforce governance with wider enterprise data standards and tooling.
4. Compliance & Risk Management
* Ensure CRM data practices comply with GDPR, the Data Protection Act, and industry regulations.
* Develop policies for data privacy, access control, and secure data usage.
* Collaborate with Legal, Risk, and IT Security to mitigate data‑related risks.
* Maintain an auditable record of governance decisions and changes.
5. Stakeholder Engagement & Change Leadership
* Lead a cross‑functional data governance working group.
* Engage senior leaders across Commercial to ensure governance supports business objectives.
* Promote a data‑driven culture through training, communication, and awareness.
* Act as a trusted advisor on governance best practice.
Key Dimensions
* Scope & Impact: Responsible for governance of all customer and commercial data across Salesforce and connected platforms.
* People Influence: Leads a distributed community of data stewards and influences senior stakeholders across Commercial.
* Investment Influence: Advises on data‑related priorities, tooling, and capability development.
* System Focus: Salesforce Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Marketing Cloud (where applicable), Vistex, and key analytics tools.
About You
Essential Experience
* Significant experience in data governance, ideally within CRM or commercial data environments.
* Strong understanding of Salesforce data models and how data flows across Sales, Service, and Marketing.
* Deep knowledge of GDPR, PECR, and data protection best practices.
* Proven ability to influence senior stakeholders and drive cross‑functional alignment.
* Experience defining and embedding data quality standards and ownership models.
* Ability to balance governance rigour with commercial agility.
Desirable Experience
* Background in large commercial organisations (B2B or B2B2C).
* Familiarity with governance tools such as Collibra, Alation, or Informatica.
* Experience working with Data Analysts, Data Scientists, and CRM Product Owners.
* Knowledge of frameworks such as DAMA or DCAM.
