About the role
Scrub Nurses / Practitioners are an integral part of our theatre teams and will undertake a variety of duties. Youll be setting the theatre up ready to accommodate patients. We typically see 18-22 patients a day in our high-volume cataract surgery provision, so youll thrive working in an efficient and fast paced environment.
Responsibilities
* Provide a competent scrub provision, supporting the surgeon through the daily theatre list, anticipating potential problems and resolving them.
* Assist with theatre setup and cleanup; ensure the highest standards of patient safety, clinical compliance and hygiene.
* Undertake medicine management and audit duties; maintain accurate patient records; manage clinical waste and ensure correct disposal procedures.
* Be empathetic and friendly to patients to help them feel at ease during surgery.
Clinical duties and technical requirements
* Up-to-date proficient scrub skills for high-volume cataract surgery.
* Full understanding of phaco machines/instrumentation and setup.
* Knowledge of the eye, biometry, lens bank and implants.
* Work as part of a theatre team, supporting admissions and discharge.
* Support the surgeon by anticipating potential problems in theatre and resolving them.
* Liaise with stores to ensure correct consumables are available to ensure smooth theatre running.
Administrative duties
* Keep accurate patient health records (electronic or handwritten).
* Report incidents via governance portal; complete audits as assigned.
* Upload documentation to systems (e.g., daily task sheets, cleaning sheets).
* Conduct post-operative calls to patients within 24 hours of surgery; escalate clinical concerns where necessary.
* Be a member of the out-of-hours on-call team on a rotational basis (remunerated).
Professional duties
* Work within the Nursing and Midwifery Council code of practice; demonstrate commitment to CPD and clinical governance.
* Participate in training and development of clinical and other staff; engage in clinical audit and research projects as required.
Requirements
* Nursing degree or equivalent qualification is essential.
* Current registration with the NMC or HCPC.
* Essential ophthalmology or scrub experience; knowledge of clinical practice; experience of and commitment to medical audit; proficient with Microsoft Office and computerized systems.
