Overview of the project
Lancaster University Medical School is seeking to appoint a Research Associate for a time-limited project on Supportive Oncology and Cancer Policy. This is a part-time post (3 days per week) for 5 months, starting as soon as possible, with all hours to be completed by 1st July 2026.
The project aims to strengthen the link between research evidence on supportive oncology and real-world cancer policy at both local and national levels. Working with NHS Integrated Care Boards, third sector partners, and national organisations, the project will deliver two linked events: a regional roundtable in Lancashire and South Cumbria, and a national policy discussion in London. Building on the Medical School’s research expertise and responding directly to the Lancet Oncology Commission’s 2025 report “A Human Crisis in Cancer”, the project addresses inequities in cancer outcomes, workforce pressures, and the need for human-centred, sustainable cancer care. Outputs will include an evidence briefing, a joint policy paper, and digital resources to support public and policy engagement.
Role responsibilities
As part of a small, multidisciplinary team, you will be responsible for:
1. Co-ordinating and supporting the delivery of regional and national stakeholder events.
2. Synthesising research evidence, patient perspectives, and policy information into accessible briefings and outputs.
3. Drafting reports, summaries, and communications materials for policymakers, NHS partners, and third sector organisations.
4. Supporting follow-up engagement with key stakeholders to maximise the project’s impact.
5. Ensuring all outputs meet high standards of quality, ethics, and timeliness.
About you
We are keen to hear from candidates who have:
6. Educated to degree level or equivalent professional experience in a relevant field such as public policy, health policy, or social sciences.
7. Experience producing written outputs for policy, research, or professional audiences.
8. Ability to synthesise complex information into clear, concise, and accessible formats.
9. Knowledge of UK health policy and/or NHS structures, or the ability to develop this quickly.
10. Strong organisational, stakeholder engagement, and time-management skills.
11. Enthusiasm for working in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team and delivering impact-focused outputs.
