Offer description

About us

We are recruiting a qualified solicitor or barrister, with significant experience in commercial law.

The UK is on a journey to reach net zero by 2050. The energy sector plays a vital part in helping the country to make this transformational change but to deliver on this ambition we need people with talent, the drive, and the passion to help us tackle climate change. Constructing new infrastructure and putting in place the associated commercial arrangements sits at the heart of realising this ambition. The need for an additional energy/commercial lawyer in the General Counsel function is to provide commercial legal advice to National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) and potentially other parts of the National Grid group.

As a pivotal member of our high-performing NGET Legal team, you will work with business stakeholders across the organisation to shape, negotiate and deliver the agreements that underpin the UK's energy transition. You will also support the Senior Commercial Lawyers in the team. From drafting and executing multi‑million‑pound strategic and commercial contracts to supporting R&D collaborations, you will be trusted to support and steer critical projects from concept to completion. Drawing on your commercial experience, you will also provide agile, solutions‑focused advice on novel issues arising within the evolving energy landscape. This is a role for a lawyer who wants to be at the heart of the utility sector's most exciting challenges-translating bold strategy into robust, future‑proofed legal outcomes.

Location: National Grid House, Warwick. This role operates on a hybrid basis, with three days per week in the office and the remaining time working from home, in line with business and team requirements, using technology to ensure we always feel connected.

About the role

We are seeking a commercially minded lawyer with strong energy and commercial law expertise and a genuine passion for the energy transition and net zero ambition. This role plays a key part in enabling the business to deliver its strategic objectives by providing high quality, pragmatic legal advice across a broad range of complex commercial and contractual matters.

You will act as a trusted adviser to stakeholders across National Grid, leading or supporting on projects and business as usual work, and using your experience to influence, collaborate and drive outcomes. With strong commercial awareness of the energy and utilities sector, you will help identify and mitigate legal and commercial risk, while supporting the development of effective legal strategies aligned to business priorities.

The role also has a strong collaborative and developmental focus. You will work closely with colleagues across the General Counsel function, supporting senior commercial lawyers, sharing knowledge and embedding best practice to drive legal excellence and continuous improvement. There will be opportunities to broaden your experience, contribute to wider legal initiatives and represent the UK legal team at internal forums.

This is an ideal opportunity for a proactive and confident communicator who enjoys working in a dynamic, purpose driven environment and making a meaningful contribution to the future of energy.

About you

The candidate should be a UK qualified Solicitor or Barrister with experience of commercial agreements (likely to have between 2-5 years, although all levels of PQE will be considered if you can show the requisite experience).
