Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Finance Team as a Management Accountant. In this role, you will support the Head of Finance to deliver high-quality management accounts and financial reporting across Cumbria Health, including budget preparation and forecasting. This position is suitable for someone working towards a CGMA or ACCA qualification, with an AAT (or equivalent) in place, who wants to develop their career within a supportive and forward-thinking team.

Main duties of the job

The Management Accountant focuses on producing timely management accounts and financial information for Cumbria Health\'s GP Practices and Millom PCN. The postholder also supports the wider finance team with budgeting, forecasting, and overall financial reporting. Responsibilities include analysing financial performance, explaining variances, supporting practices and the PCN Board to monitor performance, maintaining accurate financial records, processing invoices, supporting credit control, and day-to-day finance tasks. This hands-on role requires strong organisational and communication skills, good Excel knowledge, and either an AAT qualification (or equivalent) or working towards further accounting qualifications.

Job responsibilities

This list of duties represents the broad range of tasks that may be required to be undertaken routinely or periodically. The role may include additional duties not listed here.

The finance activities you will be supported to learn and get involved in include:

* Preparing monthly management accounts and variance analyses
* Using Xero software to prepare the above
* Maintaining and updating the NL chart of accounts
* Preparing bank reconciliations, posting Xero journals for prepayments and accruals
* Creating zones and teams to isolate and account for different business segments
* Maintaining an accurate fixed asset register with additions, disposals, and depreciation journals
* Ensuring the integrity and accuracy of balance sheet ledgers
* Ensuring accounts contain only accurate and valid transactions
* Conducting regular control account reconciliations
* Assisting with management accounts system updates and improvements
* Ensuring contractual income is raised on time and accounted for correctly
* Reviewing all sales invoices before sending to customers and assisting with invoice queries
* Ensuring labour costs are correctly transferred from the payroll system
* Explaining budget variances to budget holders and senior managers
* Discussing budgetary requirements with Practice and PCN budget holders and consolidating budget requests
* Assisting in the production of annual budgets and communicating to budget holders
* Training CHL staff to understand financial information
* Monitoring income receipts and supplier payments to agreed terms
* Assisting with short-term treasury management to ensure sufficient funds
* Helping to identify fraudulent activity and mitigate scams
* Overseeing work of Finance Apprentices and monitoring delegated tasks
* Collaborating with the Management Accountant and Head of Finance on finance tasks
* Generally supporting the Finance and Accounts Officer and the Finance Apprentice with tasks

Other requirements

* Willingness to occasionally visit GP sites

Knowledge

* Significant experience of accounting functions in multi-million turnover organisations with multiple cost/profit centres
* Accuracy in posting accounting transactions, journals and reconciliations
* Understanding of budget management and variance analysis
* Experience with complex computerised finance systems
* Good knowledge of Microsoft 365, Excel data analysis, and reporting in Word
* Knowledge of GP accounts preparation
* Experience using Xero and related products; Dext, Approval Max, Apron


Qualifications

* Qualification equivalent to AAT Level 4 or qualified by experience
* Newly qualified or studying for CGMA or ACCA qualification, or equivalent
