Job Summary

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic RGN to join our friendly and highly skilled nursing team. The unit has 30 Dialysis stations where our patients attend for dialysis 3 times a week. We are situated approximately 1 mile away from the main Derriford site and located in Estover, with free parking. We are a Nurse Led unit offering patient centred care to 170 patients from Devon and Cornwall. We have satellite dialysis units at Kingsbridge and Saltash. We are fully committed to providing a supportive learning environment for all of our nurses. You will be encouraged to develop mentoring of students and new staff. We are working in partnership with Plymouth University to provide specialist renal training to nurses who wish to undertake further academic training.

Working Hours

* Monday-Saturday Early shift 06:30-14:30
* Late shift 12:00-20:00
* Twilight shift 16:00-00:00 (Monday, Wednesday, Friday)
* LD 6:30-20:00

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and ‘At Risk’ status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who can display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.


Main duties of the job

* Co-ordinate and deliver effective specialized quality nursing care ensuring the area of work runs smoothly and efficiently.
* Provide clinical expertise and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Supervise and direct junior nursing staff, healthcare assistants and learners.
* Take part in ward/haemodialysis rotation to provide specialist renal treatments using highly complex dialysis machinery.
* In the absence of Ward Sister/Deputy, regularly assume responsibility for the ward/unit, following trust standards, policies and procedures.
* Provide leadership and act as a role model for other staff members.
* Contribute to the management of risk, both clinical and financial.

Job Description and Person Specification

Job responsibilities

* Provide and deliver a high standard of specialist nursing care by initiating and coordinating assessment, planning and evaluating individual patient needs within Haemodialysis, Transplantation and Peritoneal teams.
* Commence haemodialysis, cannulation and termination of dialysis using highly complex dialysis equipment; apply problem-solving skills.
* Care for haemodialysis patients with Percutaneous Access; interpret machine alarms and take corrective action.
* Assist in care of patients undergoing minor surgical interventions; recognise problems and initiate action.
* Carry out clinical observations, recognise and respond to changes in patient condition; early recognition and intervention of acute dialysis symptoms; administer intravenous fluids/medication as appropriate.
* Promote and deliver health education; involve patients, families and carers in planning; engage in evidence-based practice to improve patient-centred care.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

* Demonstrable post-registration experience in a relevant clinical area.
* Proven evidence of recent Continuing Professional Development.
* Demonstrable intravenous therapy and venepuncture skills.

Desirable

* Demonstrable cannulation experience.
* Demonstrable ECG recording/basic interpretation skills.

Qualifications

* Essential: NMC Registration.
* Desirable: Proven Mentors Course.

Abilities & Aptitude

* Essential: Good communication skills (written and verbal), numerate, effective influencing skills.
* Desirable: Potential management abilities; ability to facilitate change within the work area.
