Assistant Managing Editor, Ebury

Ebury is looking for an Assistant Managing Editor to join its Managing Editorial team. Reporting to the Senior Managing Editor, the individual should be highly organised, with a self-motivated attitude and willingness to help others. Some experience in copy-editing, proofreading and editorial project management is preferred.

About Ebury

Ebury is the home of non-fiction. We publish the books that bring readers and authors together around shared passions in life: from cookery to creativity, from sport to spirituality, and from the most compelling personal stories to the biggest new ideas.

At the heart of Ebury are our five Hubs – Food, Lifestyle, Entertainment, Self and Smart – and our BBC Books and Ebury Partnerships lists that publish across each. Our Hubs have an expert team of editors, publicists and marketers working closely with our authors. Investing our boundless energy and collective creativity into every book, we craft the record-breaking, chart-topping, perennial bestsellers that will get you through.

The role

The new Assistant Managing Editor will be responsible for the smooth running of a selection of black-and-white books publishing across Ebury, supervising these titles through the editing process, from manuscript to print files.

Key responsibilities:

* Managing the editorial process from manuscript to print files on a key number of UK-originated mono first editions.
* Working with editors and the Production department to implement schedules and ensure that the highest editorial standards are met on schedule and within budget.
* Participating in pre-production progress meetings, updating and chasing progress with key stakeholders.
* Hiring editorial freelancers, such as copy-editors, proofreaders, indexers, sensitivity readers and typesetters; communicating expectations to them and giving feedback when necessary.
* Liaising with authors as needed.
* Collating corrections and checking revised proofs.
* Copy-editing and proofreading text as needed.
* Checking covers and jackets for errors.

What you’ll bring

This role will suit someone who is genuinely passionate about the English language, who is well organised and capable of managing multiple projects at once, and who has ideally had some experience copy-editing and proofreading.

Essential criteria:

* Impeccable grammar and spelling
* Excellent organisation, time management and attention to detail
* Ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced environment while juggling several projects at a time
* Excellent communication skills to manage various stakeholders, including authors

Preferred criteria:

* Some project editing, copy-editing and proofreading experience
* Knowledge of critical paths and the editorial workflow
* Familiarity with Biblio and Adobe software
* Proactivity and confidence in suggesting improvements to Ebury’s ways of working

Application instructions

Please apply with your CV and cover letter outlining why you are the right candidate for the role by 11:59pm on Sunday 4th of January 2026

Please ensure you include a cover letter, as it is a crucial part of our assessment process. The cover letter offers an opportunity to show how your experience and interests align with the role requirements. Typically, we expect the cover letter to be no more than one or two pages in length.

Please note we are looking for someone to join the team as soon as possible, but we are also happy to accommodate a reasonable notice period for the right candidate.

Salary

Circa £30,000 dependent on how your skills and experience align to the role, plus bonus and benefits.

Hybrid working

While our offices across the UK are places to connect, collaborate and celebrate with colleagues, we recognise that flexibility around where you work is just as important. For this role we expect that you will attend in person meetings in the office multiple times a week, particularly during the initial period of induction and training.
