Summary

This role seeks a legal professional with demonstrated expertise to lead by example and maintain high work standards. The ideal candidate will excel in problem‑solving, inspire confidence among clients and colleagues, and exercise sound judgment. They must also be adept at managing resources. Initially a 3‑month position, there is potential for extension based on performance and needs. Remote work is acceptable.


Responsibilities

* Exhibit legal expertise and lead by example.
* Ensure high standards of work and accountability.
* Solve problems effectively and inspire confidence in clients and colleagues.
* Exercise sound and consistent judgment.
* Manage resources responsibly.
* Provide legal advice and draft documentation related to procurement contracts and non‑contentious local government law.
* Support the Procurement team and provide legal advice as directed by senior legal staff.
* Stay updated on relevant legal developments.
* Assist in training staff and clients on legal issues.
* Support equality of opportunity and comply with health and safety legislation.
* Adhere to the Council’s Corporate Safeguarding Policy.
* Undertake additional duties as required supporting hybrid working needs.


Requirements


Education & Training

Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or equivalent with a current practising certificate.


Experience / Knowledge

* Experience in procurement law and contract drafting.
* Knowledge of local government governance and decision‑making.
* Ability to draft documents accurately and timely.
* Experience in construction and waste matters is desirable.


Skills and Abilities

* Excellent written and oral communication skills.
* Strong drafting skills and ability to work with minimal supervision.
* Proficiency in IT including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel and legal case management systems.
* Ability to guide and supervise legal assistants.

* Understanding and commitment to confidentiality.
* Availability to start at short notice.


Required Skills

Demonstrated understanding of equal opportunities and the diverse needs of individuals. Compliance with Council policies including safeguarding financial regulations and health and safety. Ability to work outside normal hours when required with appropriate compensation. Strong communication and engagement skills. Experience in legal practice particularly in local government law.
