At Babcock we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as an Engineering Design Manager at our Devonport Royal Dockyard or Babcock Technology Centre sites.
The role
As an Engineering Design Manager within Facilities Engineering, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. This is an exciting opportunity to join a developing part of the business undergoing significant transformation to support the engineering projects onsite at Devonport.
Facilities Engineering provides a Design Authority function for the nuclear and non-nuclear Babcock assets, including its supporting Technical Authority. In addition, it provides a professional engineering service to the operational teams, delivering design and safety solutions to enable their programmes at Devonport.
Day to day, you’ll be responsible for managing the technical aspects of a project, from identification of the need through to handover, acting as the Technical Authority single point of contact, organising and leading resources as the project demands.
Responsibilities will also include:
1. Scoping and managing the technical delivery of projects throughout their lifecycle
2. Supporting the Design Management Group to manage the development and delivery of complex design solutions within safety critical facilities, to quality, time and budget
3. Securing, organising and leading internal and external resources as the project demands
4. Ensuring that design outputs are fit for purpose and delivered within agreed budgetary and schedule constraints
5. Developing and applying a structured design process in a proportionate manner that reflects conventional and nuclear facility applications
Essential experience of the Engineering Design Manager
6. Have a strong technical background and demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills due to the levels of stakeholder management required by the role.
7. Extensive previous experience in an engineering, construction or infrastructure environment.
8. Experience of the design lifecycle and a logical approach to problem solving.
9. Sound understanding of designing and substantiating solutions for safety-critical applications, ideally gained from working in a regulated industry.
Qualifications for the Design Manager
10. You will hold a Degree in a STEM subject (or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience).
11. Registered as a Chartered/Incorporated Engineer. If not registered then you should be able to evidence that you are working towards this, along with holding membership of a relevant professional institution.

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
Many of the positions within our company are subject to national security clearance and Trade Control restrictions.
