This job is for a Consultant Gastroenterologist. The post is full-time, comprising 10 Programmed Activities (PAs).
Role Overview
Gastroenterology consultants are not part of the GIM on-call rota. We provide weekend Gastro zone reviews and GI bleeding services, currently on a 1:8 basis. The GI bleeding rota is supported by two fully trained endoscopy nurses attending out-of-hours emergencies.
Candidate Profile
We are recruiting a Gastroenterologist with an IBD interest. This is a replacement post based at Frimley Park Hospital. The successful candidate will join a team of 17 Consultants providing Gastroenterology and Hepatology services to a population of approximately 1 million patients across Bucks, Berks, Hants, and Surrey, from the acute sites at Wexham Park (Slough), Frimley Park (Camberley), and the elective site at Heatherwood in Ascot.
Responsibilities
1. Ward duties include consultant-led ward rounds three times per week, daily board rounds, and reviews of new/unstable patients.
2. Allocate time for family discussions, specialty reviews on other wards, urgent inpatient endoscopies, admin, referral triage, and SPA.
3. Provide two to three clinics and endoscopy sessions weekly, with cross-site options at Frimley and Heatherwood.
4. Attend MDTs including Colo-rectal, Upper GI, HPB for malignancy, IBD, and others.
5. Participate in weekly medical Grand Round and journal club.
6. Engage with state-of-the-art IBD imaging, including bowel ultrasound and MRI bowel services, with opportunities for research and developing expertise in small bowel ultrasound.
7. Contribute to high-quality endoscopy services across multiple units, including capsule endoscopy, balloon enteroscopy, HALO, and EMR therapy.
8. Support complex hepatobiliary and luminal procedures, supported by anesthetic colleagues and weekly propofol lists.
9. Demonstrate commitment to clinical governance, audit, and risk management to ensure high standards of patient care.
