Electrical Design Engineer – Diamond Light Source
Join Diamond Light Source, the UK's national synchrotron, as an Electrical Design Engineer. The role involves supporting the technical systems of the Diamond facility, aiding in design, development and construction of equipment for X‑ray production.
Base Pay Range
£42,556 to £49,200 (inclusive of annual allowance)
Location & Working
Harwell, Oxfordshire – hybrid: minimum 3 days onsite per week

Diamond Light Source is a leading scientific facility that uses X‑ray, infrared and ultraviolet light for research ranging from medicine to engineering. The facility is undergoing a major upgrade (Diamond‑II) to enhance its world‑class position.
About the Role
As an Electrical Design Engineer, you will provide electrical engineering design support to the technical systems of the Diamond facility. Your work will help deliver scientific research capability.
Responsibilities
* Assist and produce electrical designs for projects: motor controls, vacuum control systems, electrical rack & panel design, low‑voltage distribution systems, relays and interlock logic.
* Develop CAD schematics, hook‑ups, and other electrical design documentation.
* Assist in procurement of equipment through commercial suppliers.
* Maintain and update engineering drawings and documentation.
* Design in line with British, European, international and company standards.
* Liaise with system owners to gain experience in PLCs, motion controls, distributed I/O, instrumentation, and pneumatic controls.
* Contribute to hazard analysis and risk assessment exercises.
About You
Background in Electrical Engineering with at least a Level 3 qualification, recognised apprenticeship, HNC or above.
Passionate career in electrical engineering with experience of design, manufacture, assembly, testing and commissioning of electrical systems. Basic understanding of control systems and design methodology, with working knowledge of a CAD system.
You Will Also Have Experience In
* Producing working designs such as electrical diagrams, parts lists, and assembly drawings.
* Electrical engineering fundamentals.
* Essential health and safety context.
Areas of Design Experience
* Electrical rack build & design.
* Motor control systems for stepper, servo or DC motors.
* Vacuum control systems.
* Low‑voltage distribution systems.
* Relay and interlock logic.
