LOCATION: Cambridge SALARY: £33,482 - £39,355 REF: ALS 3043

We are looking for a motivated and hands-on individual to join the University of Cambridge (University Biomedical Services) training centre team. This role will play a key part in delivering practical training, assessment, and support to animal technicians and licensed research staff working within UBS-run facilities. Working closely with the Apprenticeship Scheme Manager, Training Centre Coordinator, NTCOs, and NACWOs, you will help develop and deliver training programmes in animal husbandry and regulated procedures, support Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses, and ensure accurate training records are maintained for all staff involved in animal care and research.

Basic Requirements:

* Institute of Animal Technology Level 3 qualification and/or relevant laboratory experience.

* Home office licence categories A–C (desirable).

* Knowledge of home office legislation (Animal Scientific Procedures Act 1986).

* Experience with aseptic techniques and pre-/post-operative care (desirable).

* Skilled in regulated procedures.

* Ability to use computerised systems.

* Extensive experience in a licensed establishment working with laboratory animals.

* Strong empathy for animals and commitment to their care.

* Experience working with IVC systems (desirable).

* Experience delivering training to individuals or groups.

Duties and Responsibilities

* Provide practical training and supervision in animal husbandry, health checks, schedule 1, and regulated procedures for new and existing staff.

* Support facility trainers, NTCOs, and NACWOs in identifying training needs and assist with training, competency assessments, and sign-offs across University biofacilities.

* Write, review, and update assessment documents and practices to ensure consistency and compliance.

* Assist in devising and delivering Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses.

* Provide cover for senior technicians when required, carrying out agreed duties in line with facility needs.

* Deliver high-standard training in animal care, welfare, and technical procedures following departmental SOPs.

* Regularly visit facilities to maintain hands-on skills and stay familiar with operational routines.

* Carry out regulated and non-regulated procedures on protected animals in line with home office licensing and assist with procedures, surgeries, and PIL training courses.

* Supervise, train, and assess others performing regulated procedures, supporting competency development and reassessment alongside facility trainers and assessors.

* Liaise directly with researchers, user groups, NACWOs, NTCOs, trainers, and assessors to identify training needs and oversee supervision and assessment of staff.

* Support competency reassessments and help develop effective training methods, record-keeping processes, and coordination of assessor meetings
