Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed Locum Consultant in Neonatal Medicine to join our team at Royal Preston Hospital for a fixed term period of 6 months. This post is ideally suited to candidates with a CCT in Neonatal Medicine or a Paediatric CCT with a specialist interest and experience in Neonatology.

The successful applicant will join our team of 8 WTE Neonatal Consultants, providing high‑quality consultant‑led care within one of the Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Units in the Lancashire and South Cumbria Neonatal Network. The unit delivers comprehensive medical neonatal intensive care, high‑dependency and special care, supported by an experienced team of ANNPs, paediatric trainees, and specialist neonatal nurses.

This role includes participation in the consultant on‑call rota, provision of daily consultant‑led ward rounds, and contribution to the safe management of critically ill and premature infants. The post holder will work collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure excellent standards of care, support clinical governance activity, and contribute to maintaining a safe and effective service.

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual seeking to gain further experience in a busy tertiary‑level neonatal environment, to develop specialist interests, or to consolidate their consultant practice within a supportive and well‑established team.

Main duties of the job

The post comprises 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), including up to 2.3 PAs per week of resident night duties on the Tier 2 rota. An indicative job plan is included within the job description and will be reviewed with the successful applicant.

The main duties include:

1. Providing consultant‑led care for infants requiring neonatal intensive care, high‑dependency care, and special care within the Level 3 NICU.
2. Undertaking daily ward rounds, ensuring timely senior review of all infants, escalation decisions, and continuity of care.
3. Participating in the resident Tier 2 night rota, delivering senior clinical support for acute admissions, neonatal emergencies, and delivery‑suite attendances.
4. Contributing to the non‑resident consultant on‑call rota, ensuring 24/7 availability for urgent clinical decision‑making and support to the medical and ANNP teams.
