Legal Counsel – Shipping and Maritime Law
BP is looking for an experienced Legal Counsel with deep expertise in shipping and maritime law to join our legal team. The role involves providing strategic legal advice for BP’s global shipping operations, ensuring compliance with international regulations, managing complex contractual and risk issues, and supporting commercial, operational, and compliance teams.
Role Synopsis
* Support BP’s group strategy by delivering legal work that fuels the organization’s ability to meet the world’s energy needs.
* Provide specialist legal support to the Shipping business and other teams within Supply, Trading & Shipping.
* Conduct counselling, drafting, negotiating and advising on transactional and disputes‑related matters, regulatory and compliance issues.
* Work independently on multiple complex matters and collaborate with Managing Counsel, Shipping, and other business leaders.
Key Accountabilities
* Provide legal advice to Shipping and other BP maritime activities, identify risks, and propose solutions.
* Handle a wide range of matters, including IMT/BST support, day‑to‑day vessel operational issues, charterparty clause drafting/reviews.
Experience and Competencies
* Qualified solicitor, barrister, or attorney with at least three years post‑qualification experience in specialist shipping law or in‑house practice with an oil major or P&I Club.
* Excellent legal and business judgment, project management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
* Deep understanding of tanker/LNG carrier chartering law and practice.
* Experience in vessel casualty response and knowledge of vessel pollution liabilities (desired).
* Background in marine dispute resolution (advantageous).
* Familiarity with vessel emissions regulations and sanctions affecting shipping.
