Location: 2 Alice Square, Birkenhead, Merseyside, CH41 2YA Hours: 36 hours per week Start Date: 30/03/2026 Pay Rate: £60.00 PAYE / £77.71 Umbrella IR35 Status: Inside IR35 Work Pattern: Hybrid – 3 days in the office, 2 days remote About the Client Wirral Council’s Law and Corporate Services Directorate provides high‑quality legal, governance, and regulatory support across the authority. The team ensures lawful decision‑making, protects the Council’s interests, and supports the delivery of key services through expert legal advice and representation. The Role The Assistant Lawyer / Lawyer will provide professional legal advice and support across a range of areas, including Safeguarding, Education, Litigation and Governance, Property and Planning, or Contracts and Commercial. The role involves advising Members and officers, drafting legal documents, undertaking negotiations, and representing the Council in courts, tribunals, and statutory hearings. Key Responsibilities Provide legal advice and services to Members, officers, and external bodies. Draft legal documents, contracts, agreements, and committee reports. Undertake litigation, advocacy, and negotiations as required. Participate in project teams to support corporate objectives. Research and interpret new legislation, case law, and regulatory developments. Ensure compliance with governance, assurance, and quality standards. Use the Legal Services Case Management System for all work and time‑recording. Represent the Monitoring Officer or Head of Legal Services at meetings and panels. Contribute to effective working relationships with internal departments, external agencies, and legal professionals. Mentor junior colleagues where appropriate. Candidate Requirements Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives. Experience providing legal advice across relevant areas of law. Strong understanding of local government legislation, governance, and decision‑making. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong analytical, research, and problem‑solving abilities. Ability to manage a high‑volume workload and meet tight deadlines. Politically aware, diplomatic, and able to handle sensitive information. IT literate with strong organisational and time‑management skills. Resilient, adaptable, and committed to high standards of customer care. Desirable: Experience working in a political or local government environment. Experience delivering training or supporting project work.
