About the Role
Our client is seeking an accomplished Major Projects Director with deep expertise in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to lead the delivery of its multi-gigawatt BESS portfolio.
This is a senior leadership role for an experienced Project Management professional who has successfully delivered multiple grid-scale BESS projects concurrently and is confident overseeing complex programmes from development through construction and commissioning.
You will provide strategic and operational leadership across major projects, manage and develop a team of Project Managers, and ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
Key Requirements
Minimum 10 years’ experience in Project Management
At least 5 years’ experience specifically delivering BESS projects
Proven track record of managing multiple large-scale grid projects simultaneously
Demonstrable line management and team leadership experience
Strong understanding of the technical, commercial, safety, and delivery challenges associated with BESS and high-voltage infrastructure
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage major BESS projects to achieve key programme milestones and employer deliverables in line with company procedures and industry best practice
Ensure project teams are appropriately resourced in line with workload, programme, and budget
Proactively coach, mentor, and develop Project Managers and team members to enhance capability and performance
Approve scopes of work, project plans, and target costs for assigned projects
Provide clear leadership while controlling delivery performance against budget and programme
Ensure robust safety management systems are implemented and effective across all projects
Establish and maintain effective controls for site construction activities
Optimise resource planning in collaboration with senior management and continuously improve delivery methods
Drive performance improvement and promote a consistent, professional approach to major project delivery
Job Objectives & Accountabilities
Work closely with the commercial team to ensure strong cost control and delivery of agreed profit margins
Own and continuously improve Major Projects company procedures
Build strong working relationships with senior client stakeholders
Undertake site inspections and agree quality benchmarks
Proactively manage Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) in line with company policies and statutory requirements
Conduct safety audits and support the preparation of risk assessments, method statements, and incident investigations
Produce regular reports to the client's Senior Leadership Team, including KPIs and progress against business objectives
Act as a visible HSQE Champion, promoting a positive and proactive safety culture
Ensure HR policies and procedures are applied consistently and direct reports are regularly reviewed
Person Specification
Extensive experience in Project Management within energy or infrastructure environments
Formal Project Management qualifications and/or training
Minimum 5 years’ electrical project management experience on 132kV networks
Electrical qualification (HNC/HND minimum; degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline desirable)
Ideally experienced SAP to 33kV
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, Outlook, Word, Excel, and MS Project
Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills
Self-motivated, enthusiastic, and able to motivate teams to meet demanding deadlines
Strong communicator with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels
Adaptable, collaborative, and committed to continuous learning and development
Demonstrates impeccable ethical standards, integrity, and professional conduct
