Overview

Consultant in Clinical Oncology (Less than full time post, 8.75 PAs). From £109,725 p.a. excl. LZ (pro-rata). Commencing as soon as possible.

We are seeking a motivated and experienced clinician with a specialist interest in Lung Cancers. The successful candidate will work with a team of established consultants and will be supported by Clinical Nurse Specialists. The service is led by the Clinical Director for Oncology and Deputy Clinical Director for Clinical Oncology.


Main duties

The post comprises 8.75 Programmed Activities (PAs) and focuses on supporting the Lung Oncology Services at GSTT, KCH and LGT.

To provide clinical oncology services to the GSTFT Cancer Centre and South East London Cancer Network. To participate in research activities and clinical trials as required. To participate in clinical and other service activities with the aim of ensuring a high standard of patient care. To take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training. To contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development.

The post holder will be accountable to the Clinical Director of Oncology.


Responsibilities (Clinical, Teaching, Training, Research, Governance, Management)

Clinical:

* Diagnosis and treatment of patients within the Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust and allied settings as required.
* Continuing clinical responsibility for patients in your charge, with proper delegation and staff training.
* Domiciliary consultations as required.
* Management of patients under relevant NHS Acts and settings.

Teaching:

* Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as part of normal clinical work; time allocated for additional teaching in the job plan.

Training:

* Contribution to training and support of doctors in training, including Educational Supervisor roles.

Research:

* Clinical trial activity and research as agreed with the clinical director.

Clinical Governance:

* Participation in clinical governance activities: audits, guideline and protocol development, and risk management.

Clinical Management:

* Contribute to management and development of the clinical service.

Other:

* The duties listed are not exhaustive; other duties may be required by the clinical director.

Person Specification

Professional Qualifications

* Essential: Hold MRCP, Full GMC Registration, Entry on the Specialist Register (Clinical Oncology) with CCT or within six months of attaining CCT
* Desirable: Higher degree qualification (MD or PhD)

Clinical Experience

* Essential: Training in management of Lung cancers; Experience of multidisciplinary cancer care; Experience in clinical trial development and operation; Experience in Acute Oncology; Broad training in Clinical Oncology (radiotherapy & chemotherapy); Experience in brachytherapy, IMRT & IGRT
* Desirable: Experience in SABR

Clinical Skills

* Essential: Ability to work as an effective MDT member; Good communication skills

Audit, Management & IT

* Essential: Track record in clinical governance, audit, management and IT skills; Understanding of audit principles

Research, Teaching

* Essential: Experience in clinical trials; Track record of research and teaching; Knowledge of research ethics
* Desirable: Original peer‑reviewed research; Commitment to teaching

Leadership / Management

* Essential: Organizational and time management skills; Clinical Audit experience; Clear communication; Leadership and decision-making ability; Teamwork; Performance management and staff development; Knowledge of budgets
* Desirable: Understanding of the role of clinical management
