Uro-gynaecology Clinical Nurse Specialist

The post is part of the specialist urogynaecology nursing service for women with pelvic floor and bladder dysfunction. The post holder will work alongside the Urogynaecology Consultant and the wider clinical team to deliver care in line with NICE Clinical Guideline Urinary Incontinence 2013 (CG171) and other national guidance.


Main duties of the job

The role is based at the Royal Preston Hospital in the dedicated gynaecology outpatient suite and contributes to the development of a nurse-led urogynaecology service for women with pelvic floor and bladder dysfunction.


Job responsibilities

* Triage all incoming referrals to the service.
* Provide specialist nursing advice and support to patients, families, carers and other healthcare professionals throughout diagnosis and treatment.
* Ensure continuity of high‑quality evidence‑based nursing care, including assessment of health and nursing needs.
* Identify and initiate appropriate care, including:
o Managing a patient case load.
o Ordering and performing diagnostic tests.
o Making referrals to appropriate specialties for onward treatment.
o Admitting and discharging women with continence needs within agreed protocols.
* Undertake nurse‑led outpatient clinics: pessary, urodynamic diagnostics, pelvic floor and incontinence clinic, support group, post‑operative follow‑up clinic.
* Maintain the BSUG database to enable accreditation of service.
* Work within UKCS pessary guidelines and urodynamic standards.
* Accept responsibility for own patient caseload, ensuring accurate plans of care, documented in patient records and outcome letters sent to GP surgery.
* Perform urodynamic studies and, where trained, flexible cystoscopies independently and in collaboration with urogynaecology clinicians, advising on treatment plans.
* Support inpatient care: liaise with ward staff to ensure timely discharge of post‑operative patients and arrange follow‑up care to the appropriate urogynaecology clinic.
* Follow up patients to provide all relevant information for informed treatment decisions.
* Attend, coordinate and contribute to multi‑disciplinary team meetings, ensuring patient representation.
* Deliver a seamless service through enhanced multi‑disciplinary team processes and communication.
* Participate in the identification and development of clinical protocols and strategies to enhance continuity and standard of urogynaecological care.
* Demonstrate clinical skills and expertise to all staff, reviewed and evaluated care provided by team members.
* Act as a role model and clinical leader, demonstrating research‑based best practice.

Identify safeguarding and vulnerable adult issues affecting patient rights.

* Develop clinical skills related to specialist practice – pessary insertion, urodynamics, continence assessment, menopause assessment.
* Collaborate with key staff to deliver nurse‑led assessment and outpatient follow‑up services, providing detailed baseline assessment and patient education.
* Work with the multi‑disciplinary team to develop, implement and evaluate integrated care pathways and documentation systems.
* Liaise with local community, social services and voluntary organisations to develop services for clients, carers and health professionals.
* Involve service users actively in providing feedback on service experience and suggestions for improvement.
* Ensure patients are fully informed of risks and benefits of procedures, contributing to informed consent processes.
* Provide relevant and accessible written information to all patients.
* Prescribe safely and appropriately in line with NMP formulary (if held).


Person Specification


Qualifications & Education

* NMC registered adult nurse.
* Evidence of up‑to‑date and relevant continuous professional development.
* Master’s degree in a relevant subject area (or willing to work towards).
* Non‑Medical Prescriber (or willing to work towards).
* Post‑graduate qualification in urogynaecology or willing to work towards.
* Cervical Cytology (Smear taker) qualification.


Knowledge & Experience

* Extensive relevant and demonstrable clinical experience in the speciality area.
* Up‑to‑date knowledge of issues affecting gynaecology patients.
* Relevant gynaecological or urological experience.
* Experience of a nurse‑led service and ability to manage a case load independently with indirect supervision.
* Experience of autonomous planning, implementing and reviewing treatment plans within a specialist area.
* Evidence of working at a senior nursing level.
* Experience of participating in research programmes.
* Experience in service improvement and development.
* Experience in coordinating an MDT group.
* Experience in urodynamics.
* Experience of health education and promotion.
* Experience in formal consenting patients for clinical procedures.


Skills & Abilities

* Organisational skills.
* IT competent.
* Experience of writing clinic letters.
* Ability to work as part of the MDT as well as autonomously.
* Evidence of development of clinical policy and guidelines.

This post requires a Disclosure and Barring Service check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975. A submission will be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.

Salary: £49,387 to £56,515 a year, Pro Rata.
