Job overview

We are looking for a HCPC registered Trainee Consultant Biomedical Scientist with RCPath / IBMS Advanced Specialist Diploma in Pathology reporting (Stage C Final examination) and working towards competence for independent reporting. The post holder will be recognised as an expert in their field.

The Trainee Consultant Biomedical Scientist is responsible for performing a wide range of complex scientific procedures as well as interpretation of biological samples. You will contribute to the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases and the investigation of other pathological processes.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have the knowledge and skills to carry out a variety of complex analytical procedures on a range of clinical specimens. They will make interpretative judgements using postgraduate level knowledge of Histopathology and focused knowledge of a specific tissue specialty. As well as undertaking complex macroscopic specimen dissection, they will be supported and trained to perform microscopic cellular analysis using both glass and digital images in order to provide reports which are used to guide the clinical management of patients.

The post holder will have the knowledge and skills to use individual judgment to make decisions that will have an impact on the end product in order to facilitate the provision of accurate and timely reports within available resources. They will be expected to liaise with senior staff in forward planning.

The post-holder will provide expert advice and opinion to colleagues both inside and outside the department as and when necessary and participate in research when requested.

They will be directly involved with the development and review of Standard Operating Procedures within their designated area, and work with the wider team to provide first class patient care.

Education, Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria

9. IBMS-accredited BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree
10. HCPC registered as a Biomedical Scientist
11. MSc or equivalent.
12. Diploma in Expert Practice in Histological Dissection

Desirable criteria

13. Other relevant professional or vocational qualification(s) e.g. IBMS Advanced Specialist Diploma
14. Management qualification

Experience and Knowledge Required

Essential criteria

15. Extensive post registration experience in all areas of laboratory practice with particular emphasis on specimen dissection, both simple and highly complex specimens.
16. Computer literate (MS Word and Excel)
17. Understands the contribution of Cellular Pathology to patient care
18. Aware of laboratory safety issues and maintaining patient confidentiality

Desirable criteria

19. Holds Specialist Diploma in Histopathology or equivalent
20. Experience of using laboratory information systems

Skills and Attributes

Essential criteria

21. Highly developed theoretical and practical knowledge and experience in the field of histological dissection. Including category D & E
22. Evidence of CPD
23. Able to lead and supervise a team
24. Able to organise, prioritise and plan own work and that of the team.
25. Able to work as a team member
26. Able to work to specified procedures.
27. Able to problem solve and supervise corrective actions
28. Knowledge and participation in Health & Safety, Clinical Governance, Quality Management and CPA activities.
29. Able to train/teach BMSs and other healthcare professionals including Specialist Registrars/trainee consultant pathologists

Desirable criteria

30. Member of the IBMS.
31. Comprehensive knowledge of the department.
32. Have experience of digital photography within a laboratory setting.
33. Ability to attend Multidiscipline Team meetings.
34. Training & Mentoring of junior staff

Essential criteria

35. Ability to work flexibly within standards and protocols of the department to meet the demands of the service.
36. Must be able to communicate with other professionals at all levels, written and verbally.
37. Conscientious and responsible attitude.
38. Articulate and confident approach to performance within the role.
39. Able to work under pressure, able to use initiative, able to plan and manage workload.
