Overview

Vessel Engineer – Kyle of Lochalsh, IV40 8AJ

Permanent/Full time (6 weeks on / 3 weeks off rota).

Serco Maritime Services deliver maritime support packages tailored to our customers’ needs within a national accreditation framework. We own and operate specialist vessels, providing services including dive support, military training, submarine rescue exercises, target/test equipment deployment/recovery and passenger transfers.


Main Accountabilities

* Ensure safe and efficient operation and maintenance of all propulsion, auxiliary and deck machinery, electrical appliances, domestic installations, fittings and structures within and outside the machinery spaces as detailed by the Company.
* Consult daily with the Master to maximise economy while maintaining minimum efficiency; keep the Master informed of engine room occurrences that may affect navigation or essential services.
* Assist the Master to ensure compliance with Oil and Environmental Pollution Prevention Legislation; ensure responsible Officers are familiar with Emergency Procedures, Contingency Plans and capable of operating Safety and Pollution Prevention equipment.
* Become familiar with details of vessel construction, machinery and operating characteristics.
* Be responsible for the overall control configuration of the vessel and all systems/equipment.
* Maintain records of labour and ensure contractors’ bills reflect quality of workmanship.
* Submit daily figures to the Master for bunkers, lubricants and water consumed/remaining onboard.
* Ensure Planned Maintenance and all normal and emergency repairs are carried out with minimal disruption and maximum reliability.
* Adhere to Company Rules and Procedures relating to their department, with emphasis on safety and related matters.
* Remain on standby while entering/leaving port or during trials; stay reachable for engine room leadership as needed.
* Promptly carry out navigational orders affecting propulsion plant from the bridge.
* Regularly inspect machinery and machinery spaces to maintain awareness of condition and capability.
* Supervise bunkering to ensure quantity and quality are as ordered.
* Arrange transfers of fuel/lubricants/ballast/fresh water with Master agreement prior to actioning.
* Schedule in-port Watchkeeper to be on board when machinery is operated.
* Prepare spare gear orders and inventories; manage Engine Room stores and ensure proper storage.
* Keep engine room records as required by the Company.
* Maximise efficiency of machinery and equipment; ensure contractor repairs are satisfactory.
* Return Company Reports and Forms to Base Office in a timely manner.
* Manage Administration and upkeep of Classification Society Survey requirements for hull and machinery.
* Be fully conversant with the company Safety Management System (Permit to Work/Tag Out, Shipboard Management Team, Shipboard Safety Committee).
* Ensure security of all watertight compartments in engine and machinery spaces.
* Provide a thorough handover when joining/leaving a Company vessel.
* Carry out any other duties as reasonably requested by the Master or the company.


Essential Requirements For The Role

* Certificate of Competence as SMEO (minimum).
* STCW Personal Survival Techniques (5 Year Refresher).
* STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (5 Year Refresher).
* STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (5 Year Refresher).
* STCW Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft (5 Year Refresher).
* STCW Elementary First Aid.
* Unrestricted ENG1 medicals.
* Passport.
* Methodical in approach.
