The post holder is primarily responsible for the repair, calibration, and maintenance of a broad range of medical, diagnostic, and therapeutic equipment, ensuring that all devices operate safely, effectively, and with minimal downtime. This role forms part of a multidisciplinary team of highly skilled specialist engineers and technicians who provide technical support for a diverse portfolio of clinical and healthcare information technology equipment.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and performance testing of a wide range of patient-connected electro-medical equipment, including some radiology devices, ensuring all equipment is safe and ready for clinical use. They will carry out complex fault diagnosis, modifications, and emergency support during procedures, often without supervision. The role includes supervising junior staff and contractors, providing technical training, completing quality-compliant documentation, and contributing to equipment evaluation and procurement. They will liaise with clinical teams and manufacturers, communicate complex technical information, and ensure all work meets ISO 9001:2015 standards and health and safety regulations. On-call work, travel to other sites, and working towards professional registration may also be required.

Qualifications
Qualifications Essential
* Professional electronics knowledge to degree equivalent level, acquired through BSc or BEng in a relevant engineering discipline or HND + short courses or equivalent training and experience
* Health & Safety training as required
* Trained to undertake Electrical Safety & Portable Appliance Testing and be able to interpret the results obtained
Desirable
* Membership of the Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT)
* Registered with Engineering Council
* Member of Institute of Physics & Engineering in Medicine (IPEM)
* To have been trained in the use of Biomedical Test Equipment
* On the job training within a medical electronics department
* Specialist manufacturers' medical equipment service training courses
Experience Essential
* oDemonstrable post qualification experience servicing a wide range of patient-connected electro-medical equipment or significant experience in non-medical electronic equipment servicing oWorking Knowledge of ISO 9001:2015 (Quality management systems) oExperience in servicing complex software controlled equipment oTake part in any necessary Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme
Desirable
* oHave worked in a Hospital Environment. oDetailed knowledge of servicing patient-connected medical equipment oWorking knowledge of the medical quality standards: oMHRA Guide To Managing Medical Devices oIEC 60601-1 (Medical electrical equipment Part 1: General requirements for safety) and IEC 62353 Medical Electrical Equipment oGood understanding of clinical issues related to medical equipment failure

* oAble to undertake skilled servicing / repair of complex expensive electronic & mechanical systems, without supervision oAbility to make measurements with highly complex electronic test equipment oAbility to understand complex instructions and circuit diagrams oAble to convey complex technical detail to clinical users, engineering colleagues & equipment manufacturers. oGood communication skills oGood standard of written and spoken English oAttention to detail in all aspects of work. oAbility to demonstrate clear & precise report writing skills oWorking knowledge of Word, Access and Excel Software oAble to plan and organise maintenance duties and negotiate with local clinical staff
Desirable
* oSkilled in servicing complex medical equipment in a healthcare environment oProficient keyboard skills and skilled in the use of Word, Access and Excel with ability to use spread sheets for data manipulation. oWillingness to oversee the work of other department members oWorking knowledge of department computerised record system
