Why The Works?

10th Best Big Company to Work For 2024 - 'Best Companies'

We don’t just sell products.

We inspire reading, learning, creativity and play.

The Works. It literally means everything. And whatever your story or background, we’re all about unlocking imagination and making creativity accessible to everyone. Whether you’re engaging with customers on the frontline or supporting our colleagues behind the scenes, your impact can be profound and far-reaching.

This is more than toys and books and art supplies. This is about inspiring people to read, learn, create and play. So, with the right passion, it all starts with you.

Become a Senior Financial Reporting Manager

As the Senior Financial Reporting Manager, you will be a vital part of our finance team, responsible for preparing all Group-level reporting and leading the financial reporting team. Your role will be pivotal in enhancing the financial management, reporting, and control environment of the group.

You will ensure the provision of high-quality supporting information through month-end to facilitate effective decision-making and lead the statutory audit process. You will also build strong relationships with other teams across the business to provide clear and concise data for decision-making, while balancing the commercial impact of financial data and recommendations.

You will be a key member of the financial reporting team, with responsibilities including:

* Review of financial data
* Statutory and external reporting
* Month-end activities
* Improving processes, policies, and controls to ensure compliance and deliver maximum value to The Works

Your Mission

* Lead the financial reporting team to deliver on targets, including mentoring, coaching, and developing less experienced members, while supporting wider finance teams.
* Develop and maintain a strong financial control environment by challenging existing procedures and processes, and designing, implementing, and improving controls as necessary.
* Provide technical financial support to business area finance functions, including the delivery of sound financial information to aid management decision-making, and rolling out training on accounting treatment under new accounting standards.
* Develop and maintain the Group Accounting manual, ensuring all relevant policies and procedures are kept up to date.
* Control all monthly group accounting, including timely and accurate delivery of monthly group management accounts.
* Oversee balance sheet control and risk management to ensure financial integrity and mitigate risks.
* Support all internal and external audit processes, contributing to audit readiness and compliance.
* Ensure compliance with statutory reporting requirements, including the production of the Annual Report and subsidiary accounts.
* Own, manage, and improve the Group’s property balance sheet and capex processes, ensuring accuracy and alignment with business objectives.
* Drive improvements in the Group’s stock reporting, including support for the profit protection team, understanding stock take frequency and reporting, stock provisions, and movements in stock balances, with the ability to clearly explain variances.
* Support with the Group’s HMRC requirements, including corporation tax and VAT, as required.
* Undertake ad hoc project work as required, such as stock control enhancements, tax controls, and capex policy review.

Skills/Behaviours That Will Set You Apart

* Qualified Accountant, with minimum 4 years post qualified experience
* Experience of IFRS and external reporting requirements
* Experience and knowledge in dealing with and concluding on technical accounting queries
* Strong analytical and planning skills, coupled with a solid accounting and control background.
* Effective communication skills to communicate accounting and controls matters to non-finance colleagues. An ability to understand the commercial implications of decision making and be able to balance these with the technical accounting requirements.

Being a great leader

As a great leader with wonderful people skills, you'll create an environment that's more than just co-workers — it's a team.

* Align Goals with Values: Ensure that your team’s goals are clearly connected to the company’s values and purpose. This helps colleagues see the bigger picture and understand how their work contributes to the overall mission.
* Clear Communication: Ensure that your team understands the goals, expectations, and their roles. Regularly share updates, encourage open dialogue and have regular check-ins.
* Role Model: Lead by example. Demonstrate the behaviours and attitudes you expect from your team, such as punctuality, responsibility, and being a brand ambassador.
* Provide Feedback: Offer constructive feedback regularly. Recognise achievements and address areas for improvement in a supportive and continuous growth manner.
* Empower Your Team: Delegate tasks and trust your team to handle them. This builds confidence and promotes professional growth.
* Conflict Resolution: Address conflicts promptly and fairly. Foster an environment where issues can be discussed openly and resolved amicably.
* Empathy: Understand and consider the feelings and perspectives of your team members. This helps in building strong, supportive relationships

And let's not forget about the most important part… your team's well-being and aspirations. You'll be their biggest supporter, cheering them on. You'll have amazing everyday conversations with your team, discussing everything from their performance to their wildest career aspirations.

Our Values

We are Crafty | We are Caring | We are Can-do

We Listen. We Care

Each year, we run an anonymous colleague engagement survey. This is so important for us to hear your feedback and suggestions. We want to know what’s going great, and what needs a couple of tweaks to help make The Works the best place you’ve ever worked! You’ll have opportunity to help give us that direction.

Promoting Diversity, Inclusion, and Applying Reasonable Adjustments

At The Works, we are proud to have an inclusive culture where everyone truly feels able to be themselves. Our roles are open to all, including under-represented groups such as ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, carers & members of the LGBTQ+ community (including those who identify as lesbian, gay, bi, trans, non-binary, or use another term).

We are open to discussions around working hours and flexible working. And, where possible, we'll try to support this. If you need reasonable adjustments for an interview you might attend with us, let us know in your application and we’ll be happy to help!

We don’t just sell products. We inspire reading, learning, creativity and play.

You sell the paint that turns someone into an artist. You provide the book that unleashes an inner author. You supply the games that help bring families together. You give someone the puzzle book that reconnects them with a late family member’s memory.

You never know who someone will become. So with your passion, and our products, you will help ignite the spark within people, allowing them to unleash their creativity, find new passions, hobbies, or rekindle fond memories.

The unseen possibilities are limitless, and it all starts with you.
