Paediatric Medical Spinal Liaison Fellow
Job Summary
Join Nottingham Children’s Hospital as a Paediatric Medical Spinal Liaison Fellow and become a key part of our paediatric spinal pathway. You will work alongside surgical teams to provide senior medical oversight for children following complex spinal surgery, covering high‑dependency post‑op care, pain optimisation, early escalation and coordinated discharge planning. The role is central to our enhanced protected bay model, designed to reduce reliance on HDU beds, improve waiting times and cut cancellations while supporting the expansion of our spinal unit.
Main Duties
* Provide senior ward‑based medical care for children after spinal surgery, including daily assessment, reviews, investigations and treatment planning.
* Escalate promptly for acutely unwell patients and optimise recovery in partnership with the paediatric pain team and allied health professionals.
* Lead coordinated, criteria‑led discharge planning, ensuring clear documentation, TTOs and safety netting for families.
* Communicate clearly with children, young people and families; contribute to peri‑operative MDTs.
* Support teaching and supervision of junior doctors and medical students.
* Participate in audit, QI and clinical governance; maintain high‑quality records and handovers.

Job Specifications
Qualifications and Registrations
* MBBS or equivalent.
* Full registration with the GMC.
* Full PLS or equivalent.
Desirable Qualifications
* MRCPCH Foundation of Practice and Theory and Science exams.
* MRCPCH Applied Knowledge in Practice and Clinical exams.
* APLS certification.
Experience
* Training in core paediatric competencies.
* Minimum two years’ experience in paediatrics, including general paediatrics or paediatric critical care.
* Desirable: experience in a paediatric subspecialty relevant to the post.
Communication and Relationship Skills
* Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, families and health professionals.
* Able to delegate appropriately.
* Able to work within a team.
Analytical and Judgment Skills
* Demonstrate understanding of audit and research importance.
* Understand clinical governance principles, capacity, consent and duty of candour.

* Flexible and responsive to change.
* Capable of formulating an initial management plan for an unwell patient.
Physical Skills
* Manual handling.
* Ready to respond to urgent situations.
* Can move around the site as required.
Salary and Contract
* Salary: £65,048 – £73,992 a year (per annum).
* Contract: Fixed term, 12 months.
* Working pattern: Full‑time.
