About Us: MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats. A role in MI5 means you’ll do unique and challenging work in a supportive environment, making a real difference to UK national security.
The Role
As a Vehicle Installation Technician, you’ll work with operational vehicles, fitting state-of-the-art technology. This role focuses on safely and securely installing specialist equipment that supports vital surveillance work, rather than engine repairs or diagnostics.
You’ll have opportunities to test electrical systems, refine build standards, and contribute to design, fabrication, planning and installation at every stage. You’ll communicate with customers to understand needs and potential improvements. The role is based in a workshop with a close-knit team; remote working is not an option, but start and finish times can be flexible.
Responsibilities
* Install specialist equipment on a range of operational vehicles in a safe, secure manner.
* Test electrical systems and refine build standards to enhance team operation.
* Contribute to design, fabrication, planning and installation at every stage.
* Communicate with customers to understand needs, ways of working and potential improvements.
* Work independently on projects as required and collaborate with the wider team.
* Follow health and safety policies; participate in training and PPE provision.
Qualifications and Skills
* Background in engineering, electrical systems or vehicle mechanics; ability to read wiring and circuitry diagrams.
* City & Guilds qualification in engineering, electrical systems or vehicle mechanical systems, or equivalent experience.
* Commitment to Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
* Full UK driving licence; ability to pass driving and medical assessments.
* Willingness to work in physically demanding environments with some lifting; able to use PPE and follow safety protocols.
* Strong communication and collaboration skills; able to work independently when needed.
Training and Development
You’ll receive a tailored induction, hands-on experience with vehicle installations, and opportunities to work with other teams (e.g., Research and Design). Training may cover electrics, fabrication, installation, and engineering compliance; qualifications in electrical installation, welding or further engineering training may be supported where needed.
