Overview
Senior Product Designer (12-month FTC) at B&Q. Location: Southampton, Store Support Office (SSO). Hybrid working (1/2 days per week in the office). Salary up to £75,000 + Pension + PMI + ShareSave + 6.6 weeks holiday.
Role summary: You’ll join to contribute to B&Q’s digital transformation by shaping design for Findability, Product Detail Page (PDP) and My Account squads, and collaborating with product managers, engineers, researchers, and stakeholders at both B&Q and Group level.
What You’ll Do / Responsibilities
* Lead end-to-end product design across digital and omni-channel experiences, ensuring intuitive, accessible solutions aligned with user and business goals.
* Focus on Mobile-First web platforms with consideration for the app experience to ensure a cohesive customer journey across touchpoints.
* Identify design opportunities, define objectives, and recommend design approaches based on project scope, timelines, and priorities.
* Translate user needs, business requirements, and technical constraints into actionable design solutions to mitigate delivery risks and improve satisfaction.
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams (product, engineering, data, ecommerce) to deepen understanding of user behaviours and ensure cohesive execution.
* Leverage research and data to inform decisions, identify gaps, and propose innovative solutions.
* Plan and run evaluative research (usability testing, prototype testing) and iterate based on insights, following Lean UX and Agile principles.
* Apply an experimentation mindset with Optimisation teams to validate assumptions and drive measurable outcomes.
* Champion user-centred design practices and contribute to the evolution of design processes, tooling, and governance.
* Contribute to shared design processes, feedback, and craft discussions; mature design systems and pattern libraries for consistency and reuse.
* Ensure the final built solution reflects the designed experience and maintains quality across touchpoints.
* Contribute to design strategy by identifying long-term opportunities and prioritising initiatives for maximum customer and business impact.
Required Skills & Experience
* Proven experience as a practical, hands-on Senior Product Designer in ecommerce or other customer-facing digital products.
* Strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end product design: discovery, UX, UI and interaction design.
* Experience designing inclusive, frictionless ecommerce experiences that deliver measurable business value.
* Expertise in responsive web design (desktop and mobile); app design experience is a plus.
* Experience with Lean UX and experimentation practices (A/B testing, data-driven design).
* Ability to plan and conduct evaluative research and apply insights to design work.
* Knowledge of accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG) and inclusive design.
* Proficient in design and prototyping tools (Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.).
* Strong understanding of design systems and component-based design.
* Collaborative, curious, and able to challenge assumptions and improve ways of working.
* Ability to simplify complexity and design intuitive user journeys.
* Effective communicator with ability to articulate design rationale and customer impact; strong feedback skills.
* Curious and improvement-driven, staying current with new technologies and trends.
Desirable Skills & Experience
* Experience with native app design (iOS/Android).
* Familiarity with designing experiences for complex businesses, the DIY market, or retail.
* Exposure to service design or mapping customer journeys beyond digital touchpoints.
* Knowledge of analytics and insights tools (GA, Contentsquare, Hotjar) and applying insights to design decisions.
* Experience contributing to or evolving design systems at scale.
* Familiarity with experimentation and optimisation platforms (Optimizely, AB Tasty).
* Aware of accessibility testing tools and practices.
* Basic understanding of front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) to support collaboration with engineers.
