We are looking to recruit two Band 6 Nurses in the Medical Eye Unit and Neuro‑Ophthalmology Service providing high‑quality, specialist nursing care to patients with complex ophthalmic and neurological conditions, supporting assessment, treatment, monitoring, and patient education across outpatient and day‑care settings. The role involves autonomous clinical practice, contributing to multidisciplinary decision‑making, coordinating care pathways, and supporting diagnostic and treatment procedures while ensuring safe, compassionate, and evidence‑based care. The post holder will demonstrate advanced clinical skills, act as a resource for junior staff, contribute to service development and quality improvement, and promote patient‑centred care that enhances outcomes and patient experience.

Post would ideally suit nurses who have a broader skill set such as those working in infusions, rheumatology, chemotherapy, critical care, ICU, neurology – as this patient cohort have complex medical needs as well as ophthalmic needs.

The Band 6 Nurses will undertake a wide range of clinical and administrative duties, including cannulation and performing and supporting FFA/ICG angiograms as required, monitoring and managing clinical inboxes, responding to patient queries and escalating concerns appropriately, and preparing patients for the Virtual Biologics Clinic (VBC). The post holder will carry out comprehensive work‑up of new patients for infusions or treatment alterations, including physical examination, counselling on treatment plans, vaccination advice, and delivery of nurse‑led clinics. Responsibilities also include running virtual blood monitoring clinics, reviewing results, and advising patients on medication changes or continuation in line with agreed protocols, as well as participating in MDT virtual biologics clinics, documenting actions related to treatment changes, non‑compliance, and adverse reactions. The role incorporates shared care initiation and follow‑up with GPs, administrative sessions to update guidelines and protocols, complete mandatory training, while maintaining a strong focus on safe, effective, and patient‑centred care.

The post holder will provide specialist nursing care within the Medical Eye and Neuro‑Ophthalmology Service, supporting patients undergoing diagnostic investigations and immunotherapy treatment. The role requires advanced clinical skills, autonomous practice, and strong communication to ensure safe, effective, and patient‑centred care. The nurse will be responsible for clinical assessment, treatment preparation and administration, monitoring of therapy, patient education, and coordination of care across multidisciplinary teams, contributing to high‑quality service delivery and improved patient outcomes.

Main Responsibilities

* Cannulate patients and administer IV medications, including fluorescein for diagnostic angiography.
* Undertake comprehensive physical assessments, obtain full medical histories, and provide counselling to patients prior to commencing immunotherapy.
* Monitor blood test results for patients receiving immunotherapy in line with service protocols and advise on medication adjustments or continuation as appropriate.
* Manage and monitor the clinical email inbox, responding to patient queries independently and escalating to clinicians when necessary.
* Initiate, implement, and monitor shared care agreements with patients’ GPs.
* Attend and actively participate in Virtual Biologics Clinics (VBC), highlighting patients at risk, escalating concerns to consultants, and completing agreed actions following MDT discussions.
