Job Description
A Mental Health Support Worker is a professional who provides counseling and support to individuals, families, and groups dealing with emotional, psychological, and behavioral issues. They help clients identify problems, develop coping strategies, and work toward improving their overall well-being through a variety of therapeutic techniques. This can include addressing mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, as well as navigating issues like stress, grief, and relationship difficulties.
Responsibilities
* Provide crisis assessment, intervention, and follow‑up support.
* Deliver individual, family, and group counseling to address emotional distress, trauma, and settlement‑related barriers.
* Offer direct services to clients experiencing domestic violence, gender‑based violence, or issues related to sexual orientation and identity and other counseling services as may be required.
* Provide supportive counseling through education, coping strategies, and information sharing.
* Facilitate workshops, information sessions, and group programs on topics such as mental wellness, stigma reduction, resilience, and self‑care, and other workshops as may be required.
* Develop individualized service and safety plans, making referrals as needed.
Qualifications
* Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) required or Master of Social Work (MSW) preferred, with registration/eligibility (OCSWSSW, CRPO, or equivalent).
* Experience in counseling, crisis intervention, and group facilitation, preferably in multicultural or community‑based settings.
* Strong knowledge of mental health, gender‑based violence, trauma, settlement issues, and systemic barriers affecting newcomers and marginalized groups.
* Ability to work effectively in diverse environments using feminist, anti‑oppressive, and trauma‑informed approaches.
* Excellent communication, problem‑solving, and organizational skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office, and databases.
* Flexibility to work some evenings and travel locally.
* Bilingual ability in English and another language required.
