Job overview

The Royal Marsden Hospital is one of Europe’s largest Oncology centre and was the world’s first hospital dedicated to cancer research, diagnosis, treatment and education, with sites in Chelsea and Sutton. The Diagnostic Cross sectional Imaging service provides an essential service to the Trust, including whole body and high quality oncology imaging, Mammography including large field and interventional procedures, Ultrasound as well as general X-Ray, IR, fluoroscopy and theatres.

Our partnership with The Institute of Cancer Research and other key organisations means we offer access to the newest clinical trials and clinical trials of novel anti-cancer agents, all imaging modalities are fundamental to this process and forefront techniques and protocols are constantly being evolved within Radiology.
We are currently inviting applications from enthusiastic CT trained radiographers for a band 7 CT diagnostic radiographer post on the Sutton site. Applicants will preferably have significant post graduate experience and cross sectional specific experience. Post graduate or CT academic qualifications are desirable. The successful candidate should be an innovative, highly motivated radiographer with good communication skills ,who is keen to contribute positively to the expanding cross sectional service.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to be flexible in their approach as the department will operate within a 6-day working, as the CT rota dictates

The post holder will work as part of the CT and cross-sectional team liaising with Radiologists and Clinicians in charge of a patient. She/he will work as part of the multi-disciplinary team liaising with clinical nurse specialists, advanced nurse practitioners, ward staff and other departmental staff. She/he will also liaise with internal and external agencies.

It is essential that the post holder will have significant post graduate experience in CT. This post requires good analytical, organisational, communication and computer skills. The key working relationships will be with other radiographers, CT superintendents on both Chelsea & Sutton sites, radiology clerical and admin staff, clinical scientists, consultant radiologists and clinical referrers.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. To ensure protocols and standards are maintained and improved to produce best diagnostic information and patient care.
2. To perform imaging examinations as an operator under the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017.
3. To follow the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) guidelines, local rules and the departmental standard operating procedures.
4. To comply with accurate patient identification procedures
5. To ensure referrals are justified correctly and booked in a timely manner.
6. To give advice where appropriate on the validity of requested examinations.
7. To be aware of Radiation safety when undertaking CT examinations and ensure the safety and protection of patients, staff and carers are adhered to.
8. To perform standard equipment Quality Assurance (QA), record results accurately and alert the Superintendent radiographer/medical physics as required.
9. To assess specific communication needs of individual patients and to ascertain from the patient, patient’s guardian or the referrer, patient’s suitability and consent for receipt of intravenous contrast media.
10. To anticipate where communication difficulties might make completion of the CT and IR checklist impossible and to implement alternative methods to ensure that patient safety is maintained.

11. State registration
12. DCR/BSc in Radiography
13. Cannulation certificate or completed workbook
14. Significant recent post graduate experience in IR and CT

17. Experience in supervision of diagnostic radiographer staff in CT

Skills Abilities/knowledge

Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.

The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
