Offer description

We are currently advertising for a Locum Consultant Anaesthetist. This post is for 10 programmed activities. The post holder will be expected to participate in a 1:10 on-call rota. A breakdown of the draft job plan for the post is included in the information pack.

The post offers the opportunity to work in a small, ACSA accredited department in an award winning hospital in an area of outstanding natural beauty within the heart of England in the rolling countryside near Skipton and Ilkley, close to the Yorkshire Dales National Park.


Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be expected to work as part of a team of Consultants and will be required to contribute to the ongoing development of the Department of Anaesthesia at Airedale Hospital.

Applicants must -

* be on the Specialist Register, or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK. (If you are a trainee, currently on a UK training programme, and are not yet on the specialist register, please provide details of your expected CCT date on your application form) Or
* be an associate specialist within the UK and able to demonstrate ability to work at consultant level via CV and interview OR
* be a SAS doctor within the UK signed off by clinical or medical director to be working autonomously for all areas of clinical service provided at ANHST in accordance with the SAS charter and able to demonstrate ability to work at consultant level via CV and interview.

The initial job plan is for 10 PA's with opportunity for extra PA's (up to 12 in total). Time is allocated within job plans for any additional responsibilities in addition to SPA time. Professional leave is available for additional responsibilities in addition to study leave.

The successful applicant will join a team of enthusiastic anaesthetists who can offer expertise and training in Regional Anaesthesia, Critical Care, Leadership and Sustainability, Quality Improvement, and Perioperative Medicine. The department has recently been awarded Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation (ACSA) having been commended by ACSA in many aspects including team communication, simulation training and Specialty Doctor career development.


Job responsibilities

DUTIES

Provision of preoperative assessment, anaesthetic care and immediate postoperative care to patients at Airedale General Hospital requiring diagnosis or treatment of illness in a variety of settings. Including anaesthesia for paediatric patients down to 3 years or below subject to agreement with the paediatric lead.

Management of patients on Critical Care, Labour Ward, Accident and Emergency Department, Operating Theatres, Hospital Wards, Radiology Department, Dales Suite, Pre-assessment Unit, Majax Response, Member of the Trauma Team.

On call from home, frequency dependent on rota. On call period starts at 1730 with a handover and finishes at 0800 am with the next day handover. Weekend shifts start as resident for the 8 am handover with predicted work followed by an on call period. Some consultants choose to split the day/night work and others do 24 hour shifts.

Depending on the rota, the primary responsibility is for cover of the emergency theatre and Obstetric service or the Critical Care unit. Additional responsibilities include majax, major haemorrhage and trauma response, supervision of critical care transfers, management of critical care beds and supervision of the resident anaesthetists. A ward round of all Critical Care patients should be completed and documented 7 days a week.

Supporting Professional Activities

CPD, Audit, Clinical Governance, Job Planning, Annual Appraisal/Revalidation, Clinical Management, Mandatory Training, Teaching and Training. All consultants are asked to contribute to the teaching programs in anaesthesia and/or critical care medicine.

Any other duties necessary for the successful performance of the role, commensurate with the grade.

All Consultants are expected to play their part in assisting the Royal College of Anaesthetists College Tutor in this role. There is support and assistance with the preparation for the Primary and Final Fellowship including exam related tutorials, written and oral viva practice.

The curriculum delivered will be determined by the Royal College of Anaesthetists. There are Journal Club meetings on Wednesday lunch-times and half day CT1/CT2 tutorials fortnightly.

CLINICAL EFFECTIVENESS

All anaesthetists attend monthly clinical governance meetings; undertake or support junior medical staff in completing an audit project each year; work with colleagues and management to implement NICE guidelines, NCEPOD recommendations, hospital policies relevant to anaesthesia, AAGBI and RCoA recommendations/guidelines. Participate in NCEPOD reporting; formulating local guidelines and protocols relevant to anaesthesia.

ROTA

On call frequency 1:10 initially. Category A - 3%


Person Specification


Qualifications

* MBBS or equivalent
* GMC Registration
* FRCA or FFARCS or equivalent
* Higher academic qualifications ATLS / ALS / APLS / PALS
* Attendance at recognised management course
* Intermediate/Advanced level ICM or Obstetrics
* Teaching qualification


Experience

* Be on the GMC Specialist Register or be no more than six months from receiving CCT at interview date or SAS/AS signed off by CD to work at Consultant level
* Thorough understanding of the NHS Constitution and its implications
* Management & leadership experience


Skills

* Wide general experience of anaesthesia including perioperative medicine and obstetrics
* Ability to contribute to the full range of skills required for the on call rota
* Evidence of clear/lucid written skills
* Experience of teaching and supervision of postgraduate trainees
* Experience of working in multi-disciplinary team
* Experience of Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing


Other Attributes

* Ability and willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national level
* Evidence of involvement in quality improvement initiatives
* Attendance at "training the trainers" course
* Attendance at assessment and appraisal course
* Presentations at regional/national conferences
