Offer description

Advanced Nurse Practitioner / Advanced Clinical Nurse Specialist – Annex 21 Trainee ANP

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK, employing around 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million, and a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

Shift pattern: 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 9 am – 5 pm. Effective 1 April 2026, full‑time working hours for all Agenda for Change posts will be reduced to 36 hours.

The Acute Oncology Service at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital is a nurse‑led service run by experienced Advanced Nurse Practitioners. The service provides specialised oncology care and advice to patients who present acutely unwell as a result of an oncological emergency or as a side effect of their cancer treatment.

The role of the Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) within the Acute Oncology Service involves directly providing advanced clinical care to patients with oncological malignancies. The post holder will independently utilise a broad range of advanced knowledge, skills and theory in the clinical assessment, diagnosis and initial management of the medical and nursing needs of this specialist group of patients. The ANP will possess skills in the early detection and intervention of clinical deterioration, and will demonstrate high levels of communication to liaise effectively with the wider multidisciplinary team. High personal professional autonomy and critical judgement are required within the guidelines of agreed clinical protocols.

Additionally, the role includes acting as Advanced Clinical Nurse Specialist for the Cancer of Unknown Primary service approximately two days per week, based at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre. Responsibilities involve working with the MDT, clinically assessing patients in clinic, providing psychological support, complex symptom management and prescribing chemotherapy/systemic anti‑cancer treatment.

Applications are sought from experienced nurses who are currently undertaking advanced practice roles within an acute care setting (e.g., acute medicine, surgical, oncology/haematology) and who have a minimum of five years’ nursing experience. Competence in the provision of acute care to the highest standard is required, as is evidence of sound clinical decision making and prescribing practice, with knowledge and training equivalent to masters level or the commitment to undertake the required pathway. Senior leadership responsibility and quality improvement projects are essential. Candidates must be or be committed to completing a clinical assessment course and NMP training. Depending on interest, this post may also be offered as a trainee ANP opportunity via Annex 21.

Applicants must be a Registered General Nurse with current NMC registration and provide evidence of continuing professional development.

Informal contact: Alison Wilson, Lead ANP Acute Oncology – 0141 301 7083, Alison.wilson13@nhs.scot. Details on how to contact the Recruitment Service can be found within the Candidate Information Packs.
