We are delighted to be working exclusively on this unique opportunity for an experienced Lawyer to join the Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland (MDDUS) in-house Legal Team in Glasgow.
MDDUS, a longstanding medical and dental defense organisation, has provided support to doctors and dentists across the United Kingdom for more than a century, offering access to expert medico-legal and dento-legal advice and professional indemnity for doctors, dentists and other healthcare professionals across the UK. With offices in both Glasgow and London, they provide guidance, assistance, and indemnity to its clients.
This role focuses on clinical negligence matters, and you will be responsible for managing your own caseload which will include regulatory cases, fatal accident inquiries, disciplinary investigations, and advice queries. Your key duties will include –
1. Full delegated authority to settle claims up to certain approved levels for both damages and costs and to grant authorisation for more junior legal staff up to this level.
2. The provision of legal services to members in respect of civil claims, GMC/GDC investigations and MPTS hearings, FAIs and general advice queries.
3. Liaising with medical and dental advisors in the provision of services to members
4. Assisting other departments, to include contributing to publications, the provision of training to both MDDUS staff and members, advising/updating risk committees and actuarial staff, and contributing to the development of protocols, policies, and other initiatives as and when required.
The ideal candidate for this role will have 5+ years’ PQE, however, the team is also open to more junior level candidates providing they possess relevant experience. Candidates who qualified in early 2024 with relevant experience are also encouraged to apply. Interested applicants should possess previous clinical negligence experience/exposure and have a good understanding of the procedures in both the Sheriff Court and Court of Session.
