Job overview

We have a great opportunity for a Registered Mental Health or Registered General Nurse to join our service. This is an exciting new role within the Citywide Eating Disorder service.

The Physical Health team is newly developed, and we aim to offer physical health care reviews including physical observations, ECG and phlebotomy to our service users who present with high levels of physical risk due to the nature of the illness associated with Eating disorders, mainly being anorexia.

The Physical Health team will be a small team initially and aims to consist of x2 band 6 registered nurses, a GP with Special interest and x 2 band 4 Healthcare Assistants with support from The team Consultant.

The team will support the physical health needs, initially of service users across Salford, Bury and Wigan with plans to expand across the GM foot print as the service develops and becomes more established, this may require our staff to partake in a rotation across locations within Greater Manchester. Where there is a requirement to travel significantly further than the team base in Salford from home, travel time and expenses will be provided.


Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide and carry out ;

- Physical health observations such as BP, pulse, temperature, BM’s, oxygen saturation levels, respiratory rate.

· Weight and Height recording (with an understanding of healthy weight parameters and BMI.)

· Blood tests.

· Review and highlight any concerns about physical health to doctors in the team.

· Using a protocol or act on advice from a team doctor to make a management plan whereneeded if physical health checks show abnormalities. Advice will be available from a doctor tosupport with this.

· Providing information to patients about their physical health

· Advice & support in managing long term medical conditions.

· Potential basic wound care

· Offer practical mental health support and have an awareness and understanding of eatingdisorders.

· Responding to urgent requests where required particularly if there has been high risk factorsbrought to your attention and seek medical support where indicated.

· Audit and review of the clinic in conjunction with the Operational manager.

· Adhere to MEED guidelines (Medical Emergencies in Eating Disorders.) We are looking for an RMN/ RGN to facilitate physical health monitoring clinics and provide care to those who require intensive monitoring whilst under the service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

CLINICAL

1.0 Assist in the development and implementation of integrated care pathways, including appropriate service user referrals and models of care.

1.2 Participate in case supervision to monitor standards of service user care anddocumentation.

1.3 Give/receive regular clinical supervision as per Trustpolicy.

1.4 Ensure the clinical environment is conducive to promote service users health, safety and well-being, thereby preserving and respecting each service user’s personal dignity, privacy, religious and cultural beliefs.


1.5 Ensure record keeping is in accordance with Professional and Trust standards.

1.6 Ensure the safe management of medicines and adhere to safe practice and principles of administration in accordance with the NMC code of professional conduct and Trust MedicinesCode.

1.7 Work in a professional and collaborative manner with the Multi- disciplinaryteam.

1.8 Participate and promote positive intra-agencyworking.

1.9 Conduct physical health clinics for patients who need monitoring of their physical health

1.10 Attend multidisciplinary meetings to agree management plans for patients

1.11 Assist in triage of patients being referred to the service, using a protocol and advice from a doctor as needed

1.12 Responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care without supervision.

1.13 Participate and assist in setting standards of service usercare based on sound researchfindings.

1.14 Have an awareness and understanding of eating disorders and relevant guidelines such as MEED to deliver best care possible in a sensitive and empathic manner.

MANAGERIAL

2.1 Deputise for the Clinical Team Manager asrequired

2.2 Undertake delegated responsibilities as agreed with Clinical Team Manager.

2.3 Support the formulation and implementation of clinicaland operational practices, and procedures asappropriate.

2.4 Participate in the recruitment, selection and induction of newstaff.

2.5 Participate in the Duty Rota according to current localitystructures.

2.6 Assist in the management and co-ordination of all services delivered to the service user within the clinical area optimizing all availableresources.

2.7 Support the implementation, monitoring and updating ofan operational policy and philosophy for the clinicalarea.

2.8 Ensure the principles of Clinical Governance are incorporated in service delivery by maintaining a high quality service based on agreed clinicalstandards.

2.9 Ensure adherence and implementation of Effectivephysical health care.

2.10 Have a sound clinical knowledge and awareness of MEED guidelines, risk assessment under MEED guidelines and follow protocol and policy in adherence to clients individual risk.

2.11 Ensure that Trust policies and procedures are adheredto.

2.12 Assist in the development of local protocols to ensure ahigh standard of service delivery is achieved andmaintained.

2.13 Support the process of staff participation in the formulationof new ideas/suggestions to improve service user care and service delivery.

2.14 Provide effective leadership to the designated team.

2.15 Provide statistical information asrequired.

2.16 Assist in the maintenance and updating of the unit’s equipment inventories and service schedules. Ensure regular servicing, maintenance, repair or replacement as required adhering to Health& Safety, COSHH and Medical Devices Agencyregulations.

2.17 Ensure effective processes of communication areestablished, maintained and regularly evaluated within designated team.

2.18 Assist in the investigation of complaints and incidents atteam level in accordance with Trustpolicy.

2.19 Co-ordinate utilities, equipment and services andreport/refer issues to respective managers wherenecessary.

2.20 Provide relevant staff with the necessary management supervision regarding the co-ordination and delegation of duties, to ensure a comprehensive and consistent delivery of care is maintained.

2.21 Ensure that the nursing practice of the clinical area adheresto the Trust’s policies andprocedures.

2.22 Participate in the managerialsupervision.

2.23 Appropriate participation in managing performance of staffas required.

2.24 Appropriate participation in managing attendance of staffas required.

2.25 Provide line management to more junior staff


Person specification


Education and Qualifications

* Up to date Professional Registration – Registered Mental Health / General Nurse.
* • Post registration training in relevant field • Leadership/Management training. Assessor/Mentorship Training.Previous experience of working with those who suffer with an eating disorder and any relevant training attended. Any other relevant training attended such as phlebotomy or ECG.


Experience

* 1-2 years working as a qualified nurse
* Previous experience of service development. Previous experience of working autonomously. Mentorship or leadership qualifications. Experience of working in a community environment. Experience of mentorship, supervision and co-ordination of staff. Experience of working as a Nurse in Charge/Shift Co-ordinator. Experience of Care Planning process and health improvement. Working in a multi-agency framework. Demonstrate a contribution to change management process. Experience in positive leadership of a team. Demonstrate experience of problem solving and delegation skills.

Skills and Abilities

* Ability to perform ECG’s or willingness to undertake training Ability to complete height and weight checks and record this accurately. Trained in venipuncture and blood glucose checks or willingness to undertake training. Experience in carrying out physical health observations or willingness to undertake training. Be competent in BLS or ILS. Be responsible for the safe storage and transportation of blood products to the pathlabs. Demonstrate sound leadership qualities and an understanding of management styles. Understanding of quality and change in the clinical setting. Ability to delegate and Coordinate tasks. Ability to work to deadlines. Ability to utilize assessment skills and tools effectively. Other requirements

* Due to the nature of the post it is expected that the post- holder will have the ability to travel to different sites in Greater Manchester in the course of performing duties on a rota basis.
